ALBERT A.WOLDMAN LINCOLN RUSSIANS The story of Russian- American diplomatic relations during the Civil War. By the author of LAWYER LINCOLN $5-°° LINCOLN AND THE RUSSIANS by Albert A. Woldman Lincoln and the Russians is the first vol- ume to explore extensively a much neg- lected aspect of American diplomatic relations: American— Russian relations prior to the first World War. It is only since the Russian Revolution of 191 7 that emphasis has been placed on the subject of American-Russian diplomacy; yet Russia played an important part in achiev- ing Lincoln's goal in the Civil War: the preservation of the Union. Although the purchase of Alaska is a familiar story, the story preceding it reveals an aspect of history in which Russia contributed ma- terially toward preventing British and French recognition of and aid to the Confederacy. Albert Woldman has investigated thor- oughly the reports to St. Petersburg of Baron de Stoeckl, Russian Minister to the United States. He has quoted much of the correspondence which passed between the American and Russian diplomatic corps, and the result is a unique contribu- tion to Americana and Lincolniana. The attitudes and actions of Russia, a Czarist country with little love for the principles of democracy, will come as a surprise to those whose knowledge of American-Russian relations is limited to the purchase of Alaska. But most en- couraging is the knowledge that once an Autocratic Russia and a Democratic America found common cause for friendship.
