Katz, Assistant Professor of City Planning, University of Illinois The main purpose of this biblioj^raphy is to servo as a guide to students and professionals who are concerned with the design of residential areas. The following categories of entries are included, but no attempt has been made to group then: (1) specific references to residential densities; (2) references to population densities v;hich imply residential standards ; (3) references to housing and health vj-here specific housing tjrpes are discussed, VJorks that deal with population and health in a general way have not been included; (4) writings of a number of tv/entieth century planning and jj-.f housing theorists - F, L. Wright, Corbusier, Stein, etc. - where their theories are based on clearly stated density standards or 51 specific residential types that can be translated into such standards ; (5) references to housing types vrhere the v/ork goes beyond the strict limits of architectural criticism and deals v/ith residential densities if only in an indirect v/ay; (6) references to residential site planning and design v/here the reader may wish to coupute residential densities for compara- tive purposes. The author has been able to locate the vast majority of the ref- erences cited in this bibliography. However, several of the \7orks were not obtainable for revievr but are included here because their titles or references to them in other sources suggest their value to this bibliography. The author wishes to express his appreciation to the follov;ing people: Etta Arntzen, former Librarian, College of Architecture, Cornell University, for her encouragement in the initiation of this project; Ronald E, Kaliszewski, Gradiiate, Department of City CPL Exchange Bibliography 18 Planning and Landscape Architocture, University of Illinois, for re- search assistance; and particularly to lary A.
