 . W. & C. MATHER respectfully invite the attention of all parties requiring or using steam engines, to the peculiar and 
 
 admirable properties of then- Patent Elastic Metallic Piston, which render it superior in point of economy and durability to any other invented. 
 
 The mild, equable and great elasticity, both horizontal and vertical, producing so little friction, and yielding to almost any de°Tee 
 ot oval or taper m the cylinder, and still remaining perfectly steam-tight in any part of the stroke, make it in every particular superior and perfect, so 
 mucn so, that the patentees guarantee them for twelve months, and have no doubt they will last as long as any working part of the engine. 
 
 For Air and W ater Pumps the packings are made in the same manner, except the external casing of brass, it occupies much 
 less space than leather or gaskin packing, and thus allows a much larger waterway. 
 
 . W. & C. M. have great pleasure in stating that the steadily increasing demand for their Patent Piston, and Air Pump Bucket,

 Engine Works, Edge Hill Station, Dec. 15 th, 1847. 
 Gentlemen, — In answer to your request to be informed the number 
 of miles our two engines have run with your patent piston, I beg to 
 state that the engine Lynx, ran from 8th January, to the 29th Novem- 
 ber, 1847, 27,000 miles, with her regular engineman, and some odd 
 trips with other men, during that time, (200 miles per trip) she had 
 a fitter one day’s work in the same period for pistons. The engine 
 Polyphemus, ran from 3rd January, to the 28th October, 1847, 21,800 
 miles, with her regular engineman, and some odd trips with other men, 
 (20Q miles per trip,) and she had a fitter one day’s work in the same 
 period for pistons.

 has quite answered our expectations, the Engine having worked much 
 better since we applied the same. We had the Piston out a few 
 days ago, and find it in as good condition as when we put it in.

 Gentlemen,— We have much pleasure in informing you, that 
 the Metallic Piston we had from you has given us the greatest 
 satisfaction. It has been at work about ten months, and is now as 
 good, if anything, better, than when first put in ; keeps the cylinder 
 in perfect condition, with a less consumption of tallow, and with a 
 saving of packing. We consider it a decided improvement on the 
 old pistons. We remain yours truly,

 quite true. It is in all respects superior to any other we ever had in
