BLUM Michigan State University Publication Number 48 ^ SERVICE CENTER FOR TEACHERS OF HISTORY A Service of the American Historical Association THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 60 Fifth Avenue, New York The American Historical Association, because of its continuing inter- est in the teaching of history in the schools of the United States, has established the Service Center for Teachers of History in an effort to offer constructive assistance in solving some of the problems which today beset the classroom teacher. One of the programs being sponsored by the Service Center is the preparation of a series of pamphlets, each contain- ing a concise summary of publications reflecting recent research and new interpretations in a particular field of history. Since many secondary school teachers have neither the time nor oppor- tunity to read widely in monographic literature, these pamphlets have been specifically designed to meet classroom teachers' needs. Each pam- phlet purports to bring the reader abreast of current interpretations and significant writings in a specific field of historical study. Our aim is, in short, to help the teachers help themselves by keeping up to date in their fields of interest. It is- our sincere hope that this will materially benefit the teacher and thereby contribute to the enrichment of class- room instruction. The extent to which the project is successful will be measured by the degree to which the regrettable gap between the teacher of history in the school and the specialist in historical research is narrowed.
