The Joint Standing Committee on Railways and Canals, to which was referred an order of the House of Representa- tives, passed March 28, 1849, instructing the said committee to report the estimated amount of capital required to con- struct all those railroads for which an extension of time for locating or building the same, has been asked for of this Legislature ; and also the estimated capital required to con- struct the several railroads which have been petitioned for during the present session, REPORT: That the. following corporations have asked for an extension of time for locating and constructing railroads of the present Legislature, viz: — Barre and Worcester, .... J SENATE— No. 118. 3 Acts of incorporation have been reported for the construction of new railroads, as follows, viz : — CAPITAL. Charles River Railroad, . $300,000 Waltham and Watertown Branch, 100,000 Medway Branch, 75,000 Norfolk County Branch, . 50,000 Indian Orchard, .... 50,000 Middleborough and Plympton, . 150,000 Southbridge and Blackstone, 800,000 Mount Pleasant, .... 150,000 Silver Lake, .... 35,000 Quanapowitt, .... 60,000 Dorchester and Milton, . 50,000 Springfield and Longmeadow, 150,000 Fairhaven Branch, 250,000 West Dedham Branch, . 150,000 $2,370,000 The committee are unable to give the amount of the capital stock for all the railroads petitioned for, as the petitions do not state the capital required. There is an application before the committee for a railroad in Essex County, which will cost about one hundred thousand dollars, upon which no decision has been formed ; and an application for an extension of the Eastern Railroad, which, if granted, will render necessary an increase of the capital stock of the Eastern Railroad Company of six hundred thousand dollars.
