PLAN OF CATALOGUE. sL r' The arrangement of the names of varieties in the Catalogue is alphabetical and according to the nomenclature adopted by the Society. Synonyms are given in a few instances where it seemed necessary, and these are placed under the adopted names in italics. The columns are arranged thus: In the first the names of varieties, in the next seven columns the description, and in the remaining columns the States or Districts. The State or District columns are not placed in alphabetical order, as in the octavo editions, but are grouped in Divisions somewhat similar in climate, and other charac¬ ters affecting fruit culture. Thus: 1.—Northern Division—between 42° and 49°. 2.—Central Division—between 35° and 42°. 3.—Southern Division—between 28° and 35 °. The State or District in which a fruit is recommended for cultivation is designated by a star (*), and if the variety is of great superiority and value, two stars (**); if new or recently introduced and promising, by a dagger (t). Explanation of Abbreviations. —The Size is understood by 1. for large; m. for medium, and s. for small. The Form —r. c. for roundish conical; ob. for oblong; r. ob. for roundish oblate; 11. foi flat or oblate; r. for roundish. The Col “ ~y. r. for yellow and red; r. s. for red striped; g. y. for greenish yellow; rus. for russeted; y. rus. for yellow and russet. The Quality —g. for good; v. g. for very good; b. for best. The Use —F., fruit valuable for all family purposes; K. M., valuable for kitchen or market purposes; F. M., family and market. The Season —S. for summer; E. A. for early autumn; L. A. for late autumn, and VY. for winter. All these characters of course only designate lead, ing positive features, and vary in their distinctness according to soil and climate in which they are grown. In answer to numerous letters of enquiry, the following in¬ formation is given concerning the nature and purposes of the American Pomological Society. The Society is a national one, organized under the laws of the State of Massachusetts for the purpose of elevating the standard of pomology throughout the country. It has officers in every state and territory, whose reports show the conditions of fruit growing from time to time in their respective sections. Its meetings are held once in two years in some leading city or fruit growing centre, at which time special attention is given to the fruit interests of that section. At these meetings delegates are present from state and local societies allied to horticulture, and papers are read by prominent fruit growers and men of national reputation in botany, entomology and other sciences re¬ lated to fruit growing. These papers, together with the discus¬ sion, reports, etc., are published by the Society in its biennial volume of proceedings. A leading feature of this volume is a Catalogue of Fruits which is revised at each session, and to which none but approved varieties are admitted. In connection with each variety is a brief description and a statement of the portions of the country to which it is best adapted. An im¬ portant feature of the work of the Society in connection with its Catalogue is the supervision which it exercises over the names of the varieties. To the Librarian: This Society wishes to place a set of its Proceedings in every important library, so far as they can he supplied. The volumes are published each alternate year and can be furnished complete as far back as 1871, together with a few earlier num¬ bers. Prior to that date they were printed in octavo, since then in quarto form. The volumes contain from 150 to 250 pages each, and are well indexed. They are supplied only to mem¬ bers of the Society, the fee for each session being four dollars, or twenty dollars for life membership. By taking a life mem¬ bership, in the name of the librarian or some other officer, a library can secure all of the obtainable back volumes, together with all future volumes during the life of the applicant. The Proceedings of this Society contain the most valuable collection of papers upon fruits and fruit growing that have ever been published. The tabular Catalogue of Fruits, which has formed a .part of each volume for the past twenty years, is revised at each biennial session and adds greatly to the expense and value of the work. The contributors are all of them successful fruit growers or men of national reputation in the sciences related to the cultiva¬ tion of fruits. The volume for 1889 contains papers by fifty writers, including such names as the following: Hon. H. E. VanDeman, U. S. Pomologist, Washington, I).C.; Dr. C. Y. Riley, U. S. Entomologist, Washington, D. C.; J. L. Budd, Professor of Horticulture in the Iowa Agricultural Col¬ lege; E. S. Goff, Professor of Horticulture in the University of Wisconsin; Dr. C. E. Bersey, Professor of Botany in the Univ¬ ersity of Nebraska; Barnett Brothers, Commission Merchants, Chicago; Hon. T. T. Lyon, President of the Michigan Horticul¬ tural Society. Many libraries are now receiving these Proceedings on the life membership plan. If you desire to obtain them I should be glad to supply them or to furnish any additional information. A. A. The work of the Society in establishing a simple and uniform no¬ menclature and in preventing the introduction of worthless varieties has been of incalculable benefit to the pomology of the country. Its influence has also been felt in promoting the adoption of uniform and honest methods of selling trees and marketing fruit and in regulating the exhibition of and judging of fruits at fairs. Its volumes contain important papers upon insects and fungi injurious to fruit, the production of improved varieties, and methods of cultivation. The Society invites persons who are in sympathy with its work to become members and cooperate in its efforts. Its funds are devoted entirely to the publication of its proceedings and the incidental expenses of its meetings. Membership may be obtained by remitting the fee of four dollars to the Treasurer, Benjamin G. Smith, of Cambridge, Massachusetts. A life membership is given upon the payment of twenty dollars which entitles the holder to all future publications and to such back volumes as are on hand at the time of application. A. A. Origin.— This list contains such grapes only as are of American origin; they are either cultivated varieties of one of the following American species of native wild grapes; Vi'is Kiparia, Vitis Aestivalis, Vitis Labrusca, Vitis Vulpina, or crosses between varieties of these species, or hybrids between these and the Vitis Vinifera (foreign grapes). CATALOGUE OF FRUITS—GRAPES, FOREIGN—NECTARINES xxviii IX—GRAPES, FOREIGN. As the Foreign Grapes are for cultivation under glass, they are not subject to those variations induced by climate or soil, and therefore thev may be legarded as equally adapted to all localities. Very few of the local committees have made any report in reference to these Grapes. The list below contains such as have been already adopted by the Society, with a few others very generally esteemed. In California, Utah and sections of the Southern States, they require no artificial protection or heat; it has, therefore, been thought unnecessary to tabulate the States and Territories relative to them ; but taking the old catalogue, and simply adding to it a column relative to variety as adapted to a cold house , or its want of fire heat, in our Northern States, the old form is continued. The columns explain: 1st —The Color of the fruit; 2d— Flavor ; 3d— Season of maturity; 4th—Cold for a variety that does well without lire heat; Hot for a variety wanting fire heat.
