The Original was written for the Natives of India, specially for Native Christians. It was designed principally, not for the educated but the common people. Its style, therefore, is simple and conversational. And there are also frequent repetitions, lengthy explanations, and historical, and other references which would be unnecessary and even objectionable in a book written for English readers. A work of this kind seemed to be imperatively demanded by the circumstances of this country, and the present time. It is well known that Roman Catholic priests and Jesuits have of late been entering communities of Native Christians, and drawing away, at least temporarily, many of these poor people who are ignorant of the history, the spirit, and the tactics of popery. The book has been translated into English at the request of friends who thought that it would be more accessible to, and more easily understood by, many Educated Natives in this language, than in Hindustani.
