STEVENS INTRODUCTION This directory of Illinois clay and clay products producers is intended to serve as a guide for purchasers of clays and clay products as well as for producers and others interested in this industry. Arrangement of directory. — The di- rectory and its included maps (figs. 1-6) have been prepared to provide an up-to- date list of the concerns that make up this industry in Illinois. They are con- sidered as comprising four groups: (1) clays, (2) refractories, (3) structural clay products, and (4) white wares and pottery. The producers in each group are arranged alphabetically, and the location of the main office and that of the plants or mines of each producer are given, as well as a map letter and location number which refers to figures 2-6. The exact location is recorded as the airline distance and direction from the business center of the nearest town, or by street number in the larger cities. If the mine or pit is situated at a dif- ferent place from the plant, a separate location number is given for each. The principal products produced in Illinois by each concern are listed as described by them. Index to producers. — The directory also contains an alphabetical index to producers (pp. 31, 32) which gives the names of all clay and clay products producers in the State, the map letter and location number of their plants, pits, and mines (for example : C-79 means map C, location 79), and reference to the pages on which they are listed in the directory. Index to maps. — The index to maps (pp. 33-35) lists the location numbers of the various plants in numerical order, and gives the names of the producers and the group classification of their products. Publications. — A list of the publica- tions, issued by the Illinois State Geo- logical Survey, which are of special in- terest to the clay and clay products, industry is given on page 30. Acknowledgments. — The data in the directory have been obtained by personal contact with the producers, and every effort has been made to make the di- rectory accurate and complete. To all those companies and individuals who assisted in this work, the Survey extends its thanks for their cooperation. All data given are presented with the ap- proval of the official who supplied them. Should there be any errors, the Survey will welcome corrections so that they may be incorporated in future editions.
