Won 1915 prize for painters offered by American Academy of Rome. Painting “Drama as a Teacher” designed for a theatre curtain won prize before Kenyon Cox, Edwin Holland Blashfield and the late John W. Alexander as judges. Lived through boyhood and early youth on a farm in Linn County, Iowa. Attended Cornell College, Iowa. Studied in Paris. Now has studio in Public Library, Des Moines. Painted 18 portraits which hang in State Historical Building, Des Moines, and a number which are scat- tered over Iowa. Has also done landscapes, still life and animals. Succeeded in having the Iowa State University install a four-year course in art, which is given full credit in College of Liberal Arts. He has charge of this department in the University. DARLING, JAY NORWOOD Cartoonist Address. Des Moines, Iowa. Born. Norwood, Michigan, October 21, 1876. Began cartooning for Sioux City Journal 1901. Joined “Register and Leader” staff 1906 and has been there ever since, except two years with New York Globe. Remains with “The Register” from choice, as has had many opportunities to go elsewhere. Exhibited in important galleries in this country. First picture to receive attention was “Burning Leaves,” a bon-fire picture now at University Club in Minneapolis. Awarded first gold medal given by state of Minnesota in 1913 on painting, “The Channel to the Mills,” now owned by Minneapolis Museum. See “Art and Progress,” July, 1915. EBERLE, ABASTENIA ST. LEGER Sculptor Address. 177 Madison Street, New York City, New York. Born. Webster City, Iowa, April 6, 1878. Studied New York and with George Grey Barnard. Preferred to continue study in this country rather than abroad. Written about in maga- zines, especially “The Survey,” May 3, 1913. Lived in East side in New York to study people. One of the first artists to reflect in her work spirit of social consciousness. She feels that the artist has a part to play in arousing an interest in social responsibilities. De- picted East side life in dancing figures, “Rag Picker,” “Little Moth- er,” “Windy Door-Step.” Love for children and appreciation of human values led her to select types that until recently have been almost entirely disregarded in art. The “White Slave” carries “thought-compelling quality” with it. EDSTROM, DAVID Sculptor Address. Sewanee, Tennessee. Born. Hvetlanda, Sweden, 1873. Career reads like a romance. Came to America when eight years old. Spent the next fourteen years in Burlington and Ottumwa, Iowa. Sold papers, polished medals, worked in packing houses as a boy and was famous at forty. Returned to Sweden by working way as a stoker. By pluck and insistence admitted to Art Academy in Stockholm. Then studied in Florence and Paris. Destroys his own work and begins over again. Is a fiery worker after the beautiful. Portrays pride, fear, envy and passions. Has a unique mixture of cultures, worlds and times. Some of his works are “Sphinx,” “Two Souls,” “The Hunchback,” “Two Clouds,” “The Cliff,” “Rhapsody.” Exhibited in large cities in the world. Portraiture is most successful but he does imaginative things, too. EVERETT, MRS. MARY O Painter Address. Des Moines. Born. Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. Lived in Des Moines since 1893, stud- ied Des Moines, New York, Italy. Exhibited with Society of Western Artists. Work largely landscape but prefers figures. “Florence from San Miniato” is one of her paintings. 7 FRY, SHERRY EDMUNDSON Sculptor Address. 147 Columbus Avenue, New York City, New York. Born. Creston, Iowa, September 29, 1879. Worked under Director of Sculptor at Trans-Mississippi exposition, where he received inspiration to be an artist. Studied in Chicago and Europe, especially Paris. Written about in magazines. Did “Ma- haska,” a statue, in Paris, where he received Gold medal for it. It is now in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Has done many fountains for beautiful gardens. Number of pieces for Panama exposition, as well as private residences. “Victory in Peace,” a memorial fountain on Staten Island. “It is an idealized figure of a warrior bearing his weapons at rest, yet within firm grasp, ready to be brought into play should his gesture for peace be ignored, or his word of command go un- noticed.” The model is in the State Historical building in Des Moines. GOSHORN, JOHN THOMAS Painter Address. 124 North California Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Born. Near Independence, Iowa, February 16, 1871. Studied in Chicago. Most of his work is in water color. Does mountain scenes, animals and figures. Some of his works are “Sheep at the Bars,” “Solitude,” “Patiently Waiting,” “Harvesting,” “A Lonely Cabin.” Many have been exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute. Studied with Charles Atherton Cumming in Des Moines, Iowa, and in Chicago and New York City. Work mainly in oils, but also water colors. Exhibited in large galleries of this country. Mostly interiors with figures, some landscapes and portraits. GRAY, CHARLES ALBERT Painter Address. Washington, D. C. Born. Keokuk County, Iowa, June 25, 1857. Studied in Paris. Began painting portraits for a living at 15 years of age. In art depart- ment of Chicago Daily News and then Chicago Tribune. In 1903 took up portrait painting again in St. Louis, New York and Wash- ington, D. C. Hopes to return to Iowa to make permanent home. Painted well known people as Eugene Field, Lincoln Garfield and Mc- Kinley. Reputation as portrait and landscape painter. GREFE, WILLIAM -Illustrator Lived in Des Moines for a number of years. Lived in Iowa City for years and afterward spent summers there. Re- ceived commission, from U. S. Congress to execute life size statue of Lincoln which is now in the rotunda of the Capitol. Noted statue of Admiral Farragut stands in Farragut Square, Washington. Com- missioned by State of Iowa to make heroic statue of Samuel J. Kirk- wood for the National capitol.
