To the Honorable General Court of Massachusetts. Receipt is acknowledged of a copy of an order of the House of Representatives, dated July 14, 1941, and concurred in by the Senate on July 14, 1941, as follows: Ordered, That the Secretary of the Commonwealth be requested to furnish the General Court with a tabulation of the population of the cities and towns of the Commonwealth as determined by the United States Census of 1940, ar- ranged alphabetically and by political divisions and with such comparative figures and descriptive matter as he may deem desirable. In compliance therewith I beg to submit the accompanying tabu- lations and statements. Table 1 gives the population of Massachusetts at each census for 175 years, or since the Provincial Census of 1765. On April 1, 1940, the population of the Commonwealth was 4,316,721 as compared with 4,350,910 on January 1, 1935, the date of the last State census, and 4,249,614 on April 1, 1930, the date of the pre- ceding United States Census. The gain in 1940 over 1930 was 67,107, or 1.6 per cent, while in 1940, as compared with 1935, a decrease of 34,189, or 0.78 per cent, was shown which is the first decrease in the history of the Commonwealth. Table 2 is a division of the population of the Commonwealth by censuses from 1875 to 1940, inclusive, into groups showing concentration in places of 5,000 or more and 25,000 or more. Table 3 gives the population of the cities and towns of the Conmion wealth for 1940, arranged alphabetically. Table 4 gives the population of the counties of the Common- wealth for 1940, arranged alphabetically. Table 5 gives the population of cities, in 1940 and 1935, by wards. 6 THE POPULATION OF MASSACHUSETTS. [Aug. Table 6 shows the population of cities and towns by counties at each census since 1910, with a recapitulation by counties. The counties, with the exception of Barnstable, Berkshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth and Worcester, showed a decrease in popula- tion in 1940 as compared with 1935. Tables 7, 8 and 9 give the cities and towns in order of size in 1940, with the population for 1940, 1935 and 1930, and the in- crease and decrease in number and percentage for the five-year period 1935-1940 and the ten-year period 1930-1940. In Table 7 the cities of the State are given; in Table 8, the towns having 5,000 or more population in 1940; and in Table 9, the towns having less than 5,000 population in 1940. Table 10 gives the population of Metropolitan Boston (so called) at each census since 1910. Table 11 gives the population of judicial districts by cities and towns, 1940. Table 12 gives the population of the 14 congressional districts of the Commonwealth, classified by counties, cities and towTis. Respectfully submitted, FREDERIC W. COOK, Secretary of the Commonwealth. 1941.] HOUSE — No. 2849. Table 1. — Population of Massachusetts for 175 Yeabs, as determined BY Census Enumerations, 1765-1940. [The Commonwealth of Massachusetts covers part of the territory originally granted to the Plymouth Company of England. It grew out of the consolidation of the colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay. The settlement at Plymouth began with the landing of the Pilgrims, December 22, 1020. The colony of Massachusetts Bay originated with the settlement under John Endecott at Salem, in 1628. In 1643, a confederacy was formed consisting of the colonies of Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, Con- necticut and New Haven. In 1692, under a new charter given by William III, the colonies of Massa- chusetts Bay and Plymouth were consolidated as a royal province, including also Maine. In 1780, after the Revolution, the present State Constitution was adopted. In January, 1788, the Constitu- tion of the United States was ratified by Massachusetts. The colonists in New Hampshire, in 1641, as a measure of protection and defence against the Indians, allied themselves with the colony of Massachusetts Bay and remained part of said colony until 1679, when New Hampshire was made a separate royal province, Massachusetts thereby losing part of its territory, January 1, 1680. The territory now comprising the State of Maine was set off from Massachusetts by an act passed March 3, 1820, taking effect March 15, 1820. By the Province Charter of 1692, certain islands now com- prising the county of Dukes County and Nantucket County were ceded to Massachusetts from New York (see county of Dukes County). Certain common lands in Berkshire County, known as the District of Boston Corner, were ceded to the State of New York May 14, 1853. By a settlement of a boundary controversy between Massachusetts and Rhode Island, certain exchanges of territory were made between these States April 10, 1861.] Years. Population. Authority. [Aug. Urban Concentration of Population. — The increasing tendency of the human race to concentrate in cities or to seek life in what may be termed urban conditions is one of the striking phenom- ena of the last hundred years. This is nowhere more notable among American States than in Massachusetts, where at this time there are probably more people living under these conditions than in any other State of the Union except Rhode Island. The transformation in Massachusetts during the past sixty-five years is graphically shown in the following table : Table 2. — Population of Massachusetts at Each Census, 1875-1940, BY GbOUPS, showing THE InCEEASING CONCENTRATION IN PLACES OF 5,000 AND 25,000. In sixty-five years this percentage had been reduced to 9.5, and by the same computation it appears that 90.5 per cent of our population now lives in places of 5,000 or over. In 1875, 684,524 persons in Massachusetts, or 41.4 per cent of the total population of the State, dwelt in places of 25,000 and over. According to the Census of 1940, the number of per- sons dwelling in places of 25,000 or over has risen to 2,843,556, or 65.9 per cent of the total. The net land area of Massachusetts for the census of 1940 is 7,838.7 square miles as compared with 7,876.3 square miles in 1935.' Accepting the figure 7,876.3 square miles as the area of 37.6 square miles taken by the Metropolitan Water Commission, Chapter 240, Acts of 1938. 1941.1 HOUSE — No. 2849. the State for former census-taking periods, we find that the Com- monwealth for 1935 contained 552.4 persons per square mile, against 539.5 in 1930, 526.1 in 1925, 489.1 in 1920, 468.9 in 1915, 427.4 in 1910, 381.4 in 1905, 356.2 in 1900, 317.4 in 1895, and 284.3 in 1890. The number of persons per square mile in the Common- wealth as determined by the census of 1940 on the basis of the reduced area is 550.7.
