IfahUshed bi) Cr, lit. f echham< 1870. Tyler & Seagrave, Printers, Worcester. mmmWcF ^MASSACHUSETTS '^MHERSUMSS. In presenting to the public the Photographic Collection of Past AND Present Residents, it may be well briefly to say that to obtain copies of so large a number of persons, many deceased, others removed and widely separated, has been the work of much time and labor. The perfect and successful execution of the work itself has also been attended with many difficulties — when we consider that each picture has been taken separately, under varying circumstances of light and shade, by different ar- tists, many from old copies, the only ones that could be obtained, then aU brought together and again copied, it is believed the artists most intimate- ly engaged have done as well as could be reasonably expected. The Alphabetical plan of arrangement was thought the most impartial, and on the whole most satisfactoiy. Those mounted in the books being sectional copies of the sheets, this could not be completely carried out in the bound volume, but the index, by referring to the page of each, remedies the defect. We are aware that the faces of some are not found in the collection whose pictures all would have been glad to have seen there. Of the many we desired to obtain and did not, some have passed away of whom no like- ness whatever could be found ; and many living, while desirous of ob- taining copies of others, from motives best known to themselves, declined to sit. None were excluded on sectarian or party grounds. As the num- ber must be limited, it was desired to make selections from the various oc- cupations and professions, and not only to give a goodly number of old res- idents, but a liberal sprinkling of those, who, having taken up their abode in Worcester during a more limited period, have aided much in its present growth and prosperity. IV It is hoped this bringiDg together of so many faces, of old and more re- cent acquaintances, professional men, men of business, men of different par- ties and sects, will not have any very serious or deleterious eifects — that none will in the least feel slighted that they are not of the number. The dignity of none will suffer loss by the connection, but rather the whole effect will be to strengthen the bonds of union and congeniality among the citizens of our old town, and now more modern City of Worcester. If such shall be the result, however imperfect his work, the author will be fully satisfied. Respectfully submitted. G. R. PECKHAM. I ISJ" D E X Abbott, E. E. 1 Barton, Austin 7 Atchinsoii, Geo.
