I. "Pension Office, Washington, D. C, Aug. 27, 1880. My dear Mrs. Sherman : The following little sketch of your grandfather and of Carl's great-great-grandfather may not be uninteresting. Abner Stanford enlisted for service in the Revolution, in Upton, County of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, in the beginning of the year 1776 in Captain Edward Sitgreave's company, Colonel Joseph Reid's regiment of the Massachusetts Line. He also served in Captain Daniel's company, Colonel Thomas Nixon's regiment of the Massachusetts Line and was discharged at New Wind sor, N. Y., in June or July, 1783, for which service he was pensioned at the rate of eight dollars per month. During the period cf Mr. Stanford's service he was present at and took part in the capture of General Burgoyne. Abner Stanford, of Dummerston, Vt., and Sarah Mclntyre, of Peterborough, N. H., were married at Dummerston, Vt., Nov. 24, 1800, by Jason Duncan, a Justice of the Peace. If I may be excused for advancing a suggestion, I would advise that this bit of history be copied in the Bible among the family records. (signed) L. A. Brandebury. Clerk in Pension Office." [Copied from original in possession of Mrs. M. J. Sherman.] 20 "State of Vermont. Windham County, ss. Be it remembered that at Dummerston, in the County of Wind ham, on this 24th day of November, in the year of our Lord 1800, Abner Stanford, now residing in Dummerston, and Sarah Mclntyre, late of Peterborough, in the State of New Hampshire, but now residing in said Dummerston, were duly joined in marriage by me, Jason Duncan, Justice of the Peace. A true record pr. Jason Duncan, Town Clerk." [Vol. I., p. 98, Births, Marriages and Deaths of the Town of Dummerston. | "Amount of the Town's Poor, March, 1819, valued March 23, 1 8 1 9 Abner Stanford to John Snow, $17.50 The conditions of the above vendue is that each person who bid them of is to support those sett to them, one year for the sum sett to them, including doctoring, nursing and clothing and funeral charges, if any should die during the year, the year to begin Apr. 1, 181 9 and end Apr. 1, 1820." [Ledger [on the back] Town Book [on the cover] of the Town of Chesterfield, N. H., p. i.J NOTE. Mrs. Emily Whipple informed me in 1886, that her father used to say : "Abner d. when I was sixteen, on Fulham Hill, Chesterfield." The above record proves Abner was living Mar. 23, 1819, but he probably d. within the year, which would correspond to Sam'l's 21 statement ; most likely Abner d. circa April, since his name does not appear as the others in the list do, in the records for the year Apr. i, 1819 to Mar. 31, 1820. A search thro the drafts, on the town treas. for 1818, 1819 and 1820, where bills for the support of others in the list were found, failed to discover the names of either Abner or Snow. The tax lists from 1806 up to 1820 were looked over without finding Abner's name. Abner's f. was Caleb Stanford, and his grand-f., David Stanford, who m. Dec. 30, 1712, Lydia Morse, a granddau. of Capt. Geo. Barbour, " the Puritan leader of Dedham and Medfield," Ms., b. 1612, d. 1685. Abner had six, possibly seven children by his first w. Jemima, viz., Hannah, b. July 9, 1769; Lyman, b. June 27, 1774; Lois, b. Nov. 27, 1777, m. Isaac Taft ; Sally W., b. Oct. 15, 1783; Jennie G, b. May 1, 1786; Joel, b. June 2, 1788, and .* Willis Stanford's widow stated in 1886, she "thought he said his father came from a town near Boston "; in the same year Mrs. Carver said " she believed Abner lived in Ms. with his first w.", Eastern Ms. was the early home of C^fe.6 . y the Stanfords. Phineaa, ancestor of the Dublin Stanfords, came from Sudbury, Ms. Josiah, f. of Leland Stanford, was b. in Ms. Abner appears to have lived at Upton and to have m. there ; he enlisted in Worcester Co., and served till 1783 as a Mass. soldier, after which, possibly on the death of Jemima in the early nineties, he removed to T T do-716 faMpy- ^ Dublin, N. H., where his relatives(was-P±uaeas his blather?) * For this I am indebted to Mr. h". D. Barbour, who will soon pub. a book cont. val. inform, about the Stanfords subsequent to 1712. Joel had a dau. Joanna, b. Dec. 18, 1813. 22 had preceded him, or to that neighborhood ; for, according to Mr. Barbour, Lyman's dau., Sophia, m. Dan'l. Levi Streeter of Troy, N. H., whose son, Dan'l. Levi, I met at Troy, in 1897. The fact that she was b. at Dublin (See An. Rep. Town Troy, year end. Feb. 15, 1897, p. 52) points to that town as the home of Abner during the nineties ; we find trace of him at Peterborough in 1798 (Dummerston Town Rec, Vol. I., p. 67); thence to Dum. 1799-1800 where he remained as a farmer(?) until after 1806. Willis Stanford said "he was only a few years old when his f. moved to New Boston and then to the Hill in the Center" of Chesterfield (Mrs Willis S„ 1886). Abner died on Fulham Hill, Chesterfield and was bur. at Chester field, probably in the old cemetery back of the town- house. There is evidence from various branches of the family that Abner had children by a former wife. "I have often heard my f. and moth, say there was a grown set of seven children before my grandm. married." (Mrs. Mary Smith, Letter to Lorin Follett). Mrs. Richardson remembers being told the circumstances at time of the funeral, especially about the ninety four strokes of the "passing bell." She was bur. in Sunnybeam Cem., W. The fact that there was such a person is affirmed by various members of the family, but Clarissa is a very shad owy personage. "C. m., went off and was never heard from" (Mrs. Warren). "Went to Boston, m. Jones from Me. and probably went there"(Lorin Follett). "My mother often said my sister Eliz. was like father's sister Clarissa, so that I am sure there was another dau. beside your mother" (Mrs. Smith's Letter to Lorin Follett). [ Inscr. on stones at Ely. | Note. — In the cem. at Abbott's Corner near the station, are the graves, with that of Duncan without a stone ; they are located in the s. w. corner, remote from 26 the road, immediately beside the old stone wall, near two large pines ; the stones are of white marble, and Mrs. Stanford's is broken off ; the free portion containing all the inscr., stands [1897] against the wall. The official record of Duncan's b. and that of his parents' m. are inconsistent ; the same holds of Clarissa andPhila; it is possible the m. occurred several years earlier, without record, and that when it was desired to secure a pension, proof was lacking, which necessitated a formal m. in 1800. John Stanford's intention of m. is recorded at Chesterfield, but not the m.; the clergyman is dead, no certificate was taken and John has no evidence that he was m. Duncan's name came from Jason Duncan, who was Ass't. Judge of the County Court four years and Town Clerk of Dummerston, twenty-nine years ; he d. Dec. 15, 1839, aged 90. Duncan must have been about 10, when his father left Dum. for New Boston and he could not have been more than 12 or 13 when Abner moved to Chesterfield; did he now go forth from the paternal roof to seek his fortune or did he remain at home several years longer? It depends on our determining when he went to Burke, where he worked 4 years for Augustus Walter ; Mrs. Warren, our authority on this subject, says he lived 8 years at E. Fairlee where he may have married in 1824, but his home was established at W. Fairlee at least as early as 1830— probably sooner — -when his dau. was born ; there he appears to have continued to live till about 1858, losing his wife in 1857 and marrying Mrs. Kendrick, of Lyme, the same year ; four years were spent at Hanover N. H., then, about 1862, he moved to the little farm on the bank 27 of the Connecticut, at Lyme ; not long after, he separated from his wife and was cared for by his dau., Nancy, until about 1873 ; meantime Nancy married in 1868 and the Warrens carried on the farm ; owing to a fall in a barn, Duncan sustained injuries which affected his brain, making special care necessary ; accordingly he was cared for the last two years of his life, by the town of Fairlee, dying at Mr. Southworth's, in 1875. Willis' widow states that Abner's wife went, a few years after his death, to live with Duncan, with whom she seems to have lived some 30 years or more, nearly all at W. Fairlee, where she died in 1854. 5 "Births. David A. Warren, Aug. 1, 1823 ; Evelyn Roxey Warren, Feb. 10, 1869. Deaths. Georgie E. Stanford, June 2, 1883 ; David Warren, Dec. 20, 1891." (Small F. Only relatives and immediate friends of the family, number ing seventy-five, were present. The ceremony took place in the west parlor, which had been handsomely decorated with smilax by Horan, and the young couple stood under a branch of mistletoe. The ceremony was performed by Rev. The bride was very charmingly dressed in a white faille costume and her three little sisters, in pale pink, yellow and white, acted as bridesmaids and maid of honor. Misses Maud and Ethel were bridesmaids and six year old Helen was maid of honor. The bride is very popular among her circle of acquaintances and was the recipient of manj' beautiful presents in oakwood, silverware, valuable bric-a-brac and China ware. The groom is an engineer on the Consolidated Road. After the marriage a wedding supper was served and at 9 o'clock the young people left on a two weeks' wedding trip to N. Y., Phila. and Washing ton. Stearns Stanford evidently was named after Dr. Sam'l. Stearns, a noted character of Dummerston, who may have officiated at the ushering of his namesake 3i into the world. Hon. Sam'l. Stearns, M. D., LL. D., according to the inscr. on the tomb of his second wife at Dummerston, was "one of the Senators of the Uni versity of Aberdeen in Scotland, Physician and Master of the Canon of Civil Laws;" he was also " one of the Royal Pensioners of the Kingdom of Gt. Britain." Among his published works, was one on the Aurora Borealis, and his sister was w. of Dr. Wm. Herschell, Astronomer. He was a Tory, and wore long, white hair combed straight back from the forehead, in a queue ; he was imprisoned, at one time, during the Revolution, for his British sym pathies, and had to escape later to Canada. [Mansfield's Hist. Dummerston.] "Rebecca Scott, b. Mar. 17, 1801, m. Samuel Stanford and d. July 21, 1843." [Randall's Hist. Chesterfield, p. 429.] Note. — It has been most difficult to secure any definite information about Sam'l. from his children ori rom other branches of the family ; especially vague is all about the marriages subsequent to the first. Those who know anything about Sam'l. are urged to send all details, especially those about the later wives and their children. At Chesterfield, under School Tax, 1825, Sam'l. was assessed $ 2.93. His name appears again under Invoice, Valuation and Taxes, 1831 ; elsewhere is found in the same book, 1 83 1, "S. Stanford taxes abated by his request." The name does not appear 1828-30, 1838-40, while the records for 1832-8 were missing. These records from 1824 down to 1876 should be carefully examined, in connection with those at Winchester and Hinsdale, since Sam'l. was at these places off and on for many years. 32 Chesterfield seems to have been his home so long as Rebecca lived ; circa 1 843-4-1 846 he lived with Philinda, at Winchester, and worked for Peter Follett ; he then took Chas. and went to Duncan's at W. Fairlee. He m. Phoebe Axtell at Townsend, Vt., (she belonged at Jamaica) with whom he lived 8-10 years (Mrs. Whipple), but had no children ; they lived awhile at Wadsboro, Vt.; she left him ; "he didn't live with her a great while" (Herbert Dudley); he next m. a widow, Ruth Elger, of Northfield, by whom he had two children: the oldest died in infancy; the other, Henry, was b. about 1850 and was living (1886) at Mrs. Kendrick's. Ruth Turner was this wife's maiden name; she had a son, Chas. Elger, by her first husband and in 1886 he was probably at Northfield. Sam'l. and Ruth were m. at Keene, circa 1850. Geo. took his father Sam'l. to his home at Vernon, to get him away from Ruth, to whom he never returned ; it is said she did not bear a good name ; she died of consumption, at Westmoreland, circa 1881-2. Sam'l. led a roving life ; at one time he lived at Chicago ; at another he went South ; the last 20 years of his life he spent, off and on, with his dau. Emily, at Winchester ; for five years before his death he had consumption ; he died at Mrs. Elijah Kendrick's, Winchester, June, 1868 (Mrs. Whipple); " either last of July or- first of Aug., at 65 years" (Herbert Dudeley); he died " in 1865 or 1867 " (C. R. Stan ford), and was buried at Winchester without a stone. 12. Washington St., Keene.] NOTE. — The white marble stones uniform in size and design, stand (1897) in the old yard to the right and well back, near an elm and beside the picket fence. 36 Willis remembered his father's final sickness and funeral ; he used to say his father at one time during the war of 1 812, called his mother and the children into the yard to hear the reports of the big guns. Born' at Dum., he spent his boyhood from about 5 ye-irs till old eno' to leave home, at Chesterfield, whence he went to Keene to work for Elijah Adams, whose dau. he m. about a year later. He farmed early and late in life, but butchered some 20-30 years, mostly at Keene. He lived a few years at Winchester when first m. He is said to have owned a farm at the base of Monadnock, Rindge, and to have farmed at Dublin for a time. In the summer of 1857 with the aid of his children, he secured a comfortable little home on the Chesterfield road in the suburbs of Keene. He had hardly settled down, when his wife died. He continued to live there after his second marriage till Oct. 1865, when he sold out and bought a farm of 52 acres at Chesterfield, on the Winchester road, two miles from town. The house was in a valley across the road from the site of Abner's home on Fullham Hill and I think this was included in Willis' farm, the old cellar-hole probably being in Willis' wood lot on the hill side. In 1866 Willis' name appears on the Chesterfield Invoice Book and continues there till his death 1884. He was 60 when he bought the farm and as he was unable to work it to advantage, the last years of life were not as smooth as they might have been in the snug home at Keene. Willis' final illness lasted about two weeks ; he suffered intensely from asthma and died of "lung complaint" on a Tuesday ; the funeral was Thursday, conducted by Rev. Mr. Hall, at the Congragational Church. 37 Willis was a religious man, a Methodist "very strict in his principles ;" he was licensed to preach at Rindge ; he is described by several as tall and much bent over, with fine, black hair, blue eyes, smooth face. Miss Stiles was a tailoress at Keene ; she resides at Chesterfield near the Meth. Church ; when I called in Aug. 1897, she was old and much broken, rendering an attempt to converse on genealogical subjects vain. 16. George had a former wife, by whom he had children : Geo. His father and sister Anna wrote him, but no reply came to the former ; to the little girl, he replied by a single letter during each of the years 1876-7—8, since when nothing has been heard from him. Nancy is said to have m. a railway engineer, and settled in New York State. She had at least one son, b. circa 1874-6. She was half-sister to Overseer Clark, Mer'k. Corp., Lowell, Ms. and was present at Mrs. Clark's funeral a few years since. Nancy's early career affords a sad story of a foolish flirt. Addresses.
