(Bib Jlnitinglljamaljm* edited by JOHN POTTER BRISCOE, F.R.H.S., Principal Librarian, Free Public Libraries, Nottingham, Author of Nottinghamshire Facts and Fictions, ^c. London: Hamilton, Adaus, & Co,; Nottingham : Norris & Cokayne, The Poultry. 1881. NORRIS AND COKAYNE, PRINTERS, THE POULTRY, NOTTINGHAM. TO THE MOST NOBLE WILLIAM AMELIUS AUBREY DE VERE BEAUCLERK, EARL OF BURFORD, BARON HEADINGTON AND VERE, HEREDITARY GRAND FALCONER, AND LORD LIEUTENANT OF NOTTS., THIS VOLUME IS MOST RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED BY HIS grace's MOST OBEDIENT SERVANT, The Editor. PREFACE. The readers of this little work will no doubt desire to learn something of its inception and compilation. Briefly, then, its raison de Itre is the desire evinced on many hands to give a more accessible and permanent form to the essays which it contains than is conferred by the fleeting character of the medium through which many of them were first published, namely, the columns of a daily paper — the Nottingham Daily Guardian. Very little, if any, apology will be needed for the appearance of this little volume, if we may accept as a truism the dictum of Cicero that history is the elucidation of truth. To the attainment of this desirable object, the papers herein contained -will be found to contribute in no inconsiderable degree, for owing to the great diffusion of the materials of our history which has taken place during the present generation, many sources of history have been rendered accessible which were unknown or unused by the writers of local histories now in use. It must, however, be borne in mind that Old Nottinghamshire is by no means intended to supersede any of the local histories, but rather as a corollary to them — as a commentary on many of their passages, proving or confuting, correcting or supplementing their remarks and collections. For my own part in this undertaking, I can lay but little claim to anything beyond the selection and revision, and the obtaining of sufiicient subscribers to render the publication practicable. My duties vpere undertaken in response to the requests of many, -who desired to have those contributions to local literature before them, in a more useful form than ne-wspaper extracts ; and I cannot take leave of this work without tendering my thanks to those gentlemen viii. PREFACE. who incited and assisted me to the task which here finds its con clusion. I desire also to express my thanks to the subscribers, without -whose practical support the book could not have appeared. It were ungracious of me not to acknowledge the great debt, of obligation I am under towards the contributors of Old Nottinghamshire, -who have so generously laid open the results of their time and study. I tender especial thanks for the results of laborious research, which is evinced in their several papers, to Mr. William Stevenson, now of Hull ; his son, Mr. W. Henry Stevenson; Mr. W. P. W. PhiUimore, M.A., B.C.L., who is engaged upon a work on the church bells of this county ; Major A. E. Lawson Lowe, F.S.A. (who is preparing a history of the Hundred of Broxtowe); Mr. Frederick Dobson : 'Dryasdust;' Mr. Joseph Tollinton ; and Mr. J. T. Godfrey. I have also to thank the Bishop-Suffragan of Nottingham, Mr. Dobson, Mr. Llewellyn Jewitt, Mr. John Toplis, Mr. Hewson Fussey, and the Society of Antiquaries for the use of several woodcuts, which have undoubtedly added to the value of the -work. ¦ Should Old Nottinghamshire be well received, I may issue a companion volume, towards which I have a quantity of valuahle material, in the course of a fe-w months.
