THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET JEREMIAH ^ Mi^'itxi nntx <^xxixicul ®r^ns:l^il)Crw BY Charles Rufus Brown, D. D. Professor of Hebrew and Cognate Languages in the Newton Theological Institution PHILADELPHIA American Baptist Publication Society 1630 Chestnut Street Copyright 1906 by the American Baptist Publication Society Published November, 1906 10b PUBLISHERS' KOTE This translation of the great prophecy of Jeremiah is used as collateral text in the author's contribution to the American Commentary on the Old Testament, now in process of publication by the Society. For its poetic form as well as for its critical worth it seemed important to issue it as an independent publication. It is believed that many students of the word will desire to possess it. PKEFATORY NOTE The words of Jeremiah have been edited and his life has been written by Baruch, other disciples, and friends of the prophet. In the translation which follows, no dis tinction is made between Jeremiah's own writings and those of his followers, save to include in brackets a number of superfluous additions to the text that were made by individual readers or scribes in the use of their copies, doubtless as marginal notes, or in some instances as unintentional repetitions of the words of the copy. Almost none of the additions so designated are to be found in the best MSS of the LXX version. Additions to the text later than thi.s version are retained without brackets whenever they add in the slightest degree to our knowledge of attendant circumstances, and this policy has been observed even in regard to the minute details in chaps. 27 to 29, 34, 35. Other explanatory signs are as follows : A vertical line ( | ) precedes and follows brief expressions not found in LXX but to be included in the text. Parentheses ( ) are used to include words needed to complete the sense. Words in black=faced type have been adopted in addition to (if within parentheses), or instead of words of the Massoretic Text on the authority of parallel passages and ancient translations on the one hand, and the demands of the context on the other. Wherever the present writer has adopted changes in vowels or vowel-letters he has not used this symbol, since these do not involve any alteration in the earlier text. He has endeavored to exercise great care in the use of the external evidence, and has not assumed, e. g., that a writer in quoting a biblical passage would necessarilj' do so word for word. This caution he has learned from the method of the writer of Jer. 48 : 29-38 in using parts of Isa. 15 and 16, and of Jer. 49 : 7-16 in the use of parts of Obadiah. Single words or brief expressions in italia type have been transferred from their traditional place which is indicated by an asterisk (*). Longer passages now found in the Hebrew out of their original connection, or introduced into the midst of a section of this book from some other source, are preceded by a line ( ) and followed by a broken line ( ). Should two or more passages similarly interrupt the connection, they are separated by a single line ( ) from one another, while a double line ( — ), or when needed a treble line ('^^===) is placed at the beginning of the series of insertions, and the sign of resumption ( = ), or ( =), at the close. Newton Oenteb, Massachusetts, June, 1906. C. K. B. THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET JEREMIAH •* 1 The words of Jeremiah the Preface I son of Hilkiah, of the priests 604 b.c. that were in Anathoth iu the 2 land of Benjamin ; unto whom the word of Jeho vah came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king ot Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3 And it came in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah ; unto the going into exile of Jerusalem la the fifth month. Purt I. iQiquit; and Judgment, §1. Jeremiah's Call, 626 I. c. 4 And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 5 Before I formed thee in the belly I kuew thee. And before thou earnest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, A prophet unto the nations I ap pointed thee. 6 Then I said, Alas, Lord Jehovah ! behold, I do uot know how to speak : for I am a child. 7 And Jehovah said unto me. Say not, I am a child : for nnto whomsoever I shall send thee thou shalt go, and whatsoever S I shall command thee thou shalt speak ; be not afraid of them : for I am with thee to deliver thee, says Jehovah. 9 And Jehovah put forth his hand, And touched my mouth ; And Jehovah said unto me. Behold, I put my words in thy mouth : 10 See, I appoint thee this day Over the nations and over the kingdoms. To pluck up and to break down and to destroy [and to overthrow] ; To build and to plant. 11 And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, A rod of an almond tree do I see. 12 And said Jehovah unto me. Thou hast well seen : For I am wakeful over my word to perform it. 13 And the word of Jehovah came unto me a second time, saying. What seest thou ? And I said, A heated pot do I see ; And the face thereof is turned toward the north. 14 And Jehovah said unto me. Out of the north misfortune shall be blown 15 upon all the inhabitants of the land. For, lo, I will call all [the families of] the liingdoms of the north, says Jehovah ; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the opening of the gates of Jerusalem, and before all the walls thereof round about, and before 16 all the cities of Judah. And I will execute my judgments against them on account of all their wickedness ; in that they have forsaken me, and have burned sacrifice to other gods, and worshiped the works bf their own hands. 17 And do thou gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee : Be not dismayed at them Lest I dismay thee before them. 18 For behold, I make thee this day A fortified city, [and an iron pillar], and a bronze wall, [against the whole land] , To the kings of Judah, to the princes thereof, [To the priests thereof] , and to the people of the land. 19 And they shall fight against thee ; But they shall not prevail over thee : For I am with thee to deliver thee. Says Jehovah.* 21 And the word of Jehovah came i^- unto me, saying, ingratimde 2 Go, and cry in the ears of conscquenoes. Jerusalem, saying, 626-621 b. o. Thus says Jehovah, I remember for thee the loyalty of thy youth. The love of thine espousals ; How thou didst follow me in the wilderness. In a land that was not sown. 3 Israel was holy to Jehovah, His firstfruits of the income : All that devoured him were to be held guilty ; Misfortune was to come upon them. Says Jehovah. 4 Hear ye the word of Jehovah, 0 house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel ; 5 Thus says Jehovah, What unrighteousness did your fathers find in me. That they went far from me, And walked after vanity, and became vain? 6 And said not. Where is Jehovah Who brought us up out of the land of Egypt ; Who led us in the wilderness. In a land of steppes and of pits. In a land of drought and of deep darkness. In a land that none passes through. And where no man dwells? 7 And I brought you into the fruitful country. To eat the produce thereof and the good things thereof ; Chap. 2, ver. 7] JEREMIAH [Chap. 2, ver. 37 But ye proceeded to defile my land, And to make my heritage an abomination. 8 The priests said not. Where is Jehovah? Aud they that handle the law kuew me not : The rulers also rebelled against me. And the prophets prophesied by Baal, And walked after things that do not profit. 9 Therefore I will still contend with you [says Jehovah] , And with your sons' sons will I contend. 10 For pass over to the coast lands of the Kitians, and see ; And send unto Kedar, And consider diligently, and see. If there has been such a thing. 11 Has a nation changed (its) gods? And they are not God : But my people have changed their glory For that which does not profit. 12 The heavens are astounded at this. And they shudder miglitily, says Jehovah. 13 For my people have committed two evils ; They have forsaken me, the fountain of run ning water. And hewed them out [cisterns] broken cistern That can hold no water. 14 Is Israel a servant? Is he a homeborn (slave) ? Why has he become a prey, 15 (Why are) his cities mimed up f The young lions roared upon him. They yelled : And they made his land a fright, * Without inhabitant. 16 The sons also of Noph and Tahpanhes Shall break the crown of thy nead. 17 Has not occasioned this to thee Thy desertion from Jehovah thy God, [When he led thee by the way] ? 18 And now what hast thou to do with the way to Egypt. To drink the waters of the Shihor ? Or what hast thou to do with the way to Assyria, To drink the waters of the river ? 19 Thine own misfortune shall chastise thee. And thy revoltings shall reprove thee : Know therefore and see that it is au evil thing and a bitter, That thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy God, And that no fear of me came upon thee. Says the Lord Jehovah of hosts. 20 For ever since long ago thou hast broken thy yoke, And burst thy thougs ; And thou sayest, I will not serve (thee) ; But upon every high hill And under every leafy tree Thou dost bow thyself, playing the harlot. 21 Yet I had planted thee a choice vine. Wholly a right seed : How then art thou turned to corruption To a degenerate plant I 22 For though thou wash thee with soda. And take thee much lye. Yet thine iniquity is stained before me. Says the Lord Jehovah. 23 How canst thou say, I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals? See thy way in the valley, Know what thou hast done. A swift young she-camel Running hither and thither — 24 A cow accustomed to the wilderness Tlirough her desire — SnuflEs up wind on account of her ardor. Who can turn her away ? None that seek her need weary themselves ;s In her month they may find her. 25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod. And thy throat from thirst : But thou saidst ; It is useless ; no ; For I love alien (gods). And after them must I go. 26 As the thief is put to shame when he is discovereol So shall the house of Israel be put to shame ; They, their kings, their princes, And their priests, and their prophets ; 27 Who say to a tree. Thou art my father ; And to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth i For they have turned (their) back unto me. And not (their) face : But in the time of their misfortune they say. Arise, and save us. 28 But where are thy gods That thou hast made thee ? Let them arise, if they can save thee In the time of thy misfortune. For according to the number of thy cities Are thy gods, O Judah. 29 Wherefore do ye complain unto me ? Ye all (have done wicl^edly ; And ye all) have rebelled against me. Says Jehovah. 30 In vain did I smite your sons ; They received no correction : The sword devoured your prophets, Like a destroying lion. 31 0 generation, yourselves, mark the word of Jehovah : Have I been a wilderness to Israel ? Or a land of darkness? Wherefore say my people. We are set free ; We will come no more unto thee. 32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, A bride her sash? Yet my people have forgotten me Days without number. 33 How well takest thou thy way To seek love I Therefore also to evil deeds Hast thou accustomed thy conduct. 34 Also in thy skirts is found The blood of [poor] innocent persons ; I have not found it upon house-breakers (only) But upon all these. 35 But thou sayest, I am free ; Surely his anger is turned away from me: Behold I will enter into judgment with thee. If thou sayest, I have not sinned. 36 How exceedingly light dost thou make of it To change thy ways ! Thou Shalt be put to shame by Egypt also. As thou wast put to shame by Assyria. S7 From thence also shalt thou go forth. With thy hands upon thy head : For Jehovah has rejected thy confidences. And thou shalt not prosper in them. Chap. 3, ver. 1] JEREMIAH [Chap. 4, ver. 5 3 lit is I said §3. If a man put away his wife, ^'" ^"''* And she go from him, p„„f needs. And become another man's, 626-621 b, o. Can there be a return unto him again ? Will not be greatly polluted A land like that? But thou hast played the harlot with many lovers. And canst thou return unto me ? says Jehovah. 2 Lift up thine eyes unto the bare heights, and see ; Where hast thou not been violated ? By the ways hast thou sat for them. As an Arab iu the wilderness ; And thou hast jiolluted the land with thy whoredoms And with thy misdeeds. 3 And the showers have been withholden. And there has been no spring rain ; Yet thou hadst a whore's forehead, Thou refusedst to be ashamed. 4 Dost thou not now call to me, My father. The friend of my youth art thou? 5 Will anger be retained for ever? Or will it be kept to the end ? Behold, (thus) thou hast spoken. But thou hast done evil things, and hast had thy way. Sin, Penitence, and Restoration, 626-621 B. c. 6 And Jehovah said unto me in the days of Josiah the king. Hast thou seen that which revolt ing Israel did ? She went up upon every high mountain and under every leafy tree, and played the 7 harlot there. And I said : After she has done all these things, she will return unto me ; but she returned not: and her faithless sister Judah saw, 8 and she 2 saw that, for this very cause that re volting Israel had committed adultery, I put her away and gave her a bill of divorce, yet faithless Judah her sister feared not ; but she also went 9 and played the harlot. And it came to pass that, by her common fornication, she polluted the land, and she committed adultery with stones 10 and with trees. And yet for all this [her] faith less [sister] Judah did not return unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, says Jehovah. U And Jehovah said unto me. Revolting Israel has shown herself more right- 12 eous than faithless Judah. Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say. Return, thou revolting Israel, (Unto me), says Jehovah ; (And) I will not look in anger upon you : For 1 am merciful, says Jehovah. I will not keep (anger) for ever, 13 Only know thine iniquity. That against Jehovah thy God Thou didst rebel, And didst scatter thy ways to alien (gods) Under every leafy tree. ' And to my voice thon didst not hearken. Says Jehovah. 14 Return. O revolting sons, says Jehovah ; for I am a lord to you : and I will take you one from a city, and two from a family, and I will bring 15 you to Zion : and I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who shall feed you with knowl edge and understanding. 16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and are fruitful in the land, in these days, says I Adopted on the authority of the Vui. Jehovah, that they shall say no more. The ark of the covenant of Jehovah ; neither shall it come to mind ; neither shall they remember it, nor miss it ; neither shall it be made any more. 17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of Jehovah ; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, [to the uame of Jehovah to Jerusalem] : neither snail they walk any more after the stub bornness of their evil heart. 18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk unto the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north nnto the land that I gave for an inheritance unto their fathers. 19 And I had said. How can I put thee with sons, And give thee a pleasant land. The most beautiful heritage of the nations ? And I said. Ye will call me. My Father ; And will not turn away from following me. 20 Surely as a woman is untrue to her lover. So have ye been untrue toward me, O house of Israel, says Jehovah. 21 A sound is heard upon the bare heights. The weeping with supplication of the sons of Israel ; That they have perverted their way. Forgotten Jehovah their God. 22 Return, ye revolting sons, I will heal your revolting : Behold, we have come to thee ; For thou art Jehovah our God. 23 Truly [from] the hills lead to falsehood, The tumult on the mountains : Truly in Jehovah our God Is the salvation of Israel. 24 But the shameful thing has devoured from our youth The labor of our fathers ; Their flocks and their herds, Their sons and their daughters. 25 Let us lie down in our shame. And let our confusion cover us : For we have sinned against Jehovah our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day : and we have not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah our God. 41 If thou wilt turn about, 0 Israel, says Jehovah, Unto me mayest thou return : And if thou wilt put away thy detestable things, [And] from me thou needest not wander, 2 And if thou swearest. As Jehovah lives. In truth, in judgment, and in righteousness. Then the nations shall bless themselves in him. And in him shall they glory. 3 For thus says Jehovah tn the men §5. of Judah and to (the inhabit- Judgment ants of) Jerusalem, No"rth Break up your fallow ground. 626-621 b. c. And sow not among thorns. 4 Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah, And take away the foreskin of your heart. Ye men of Judah Aud inhabitants of Jerusalem : Lest my fury go forth like fire. And burn with none to quench it. Because of the evil of your doings. 5 Declare ye in Judah, And in Jerusalem publish it : [and say] , 2 With one Heh. MS and some ancient Vrss. Chap. 4, ver. 5] JEREMIAH [Chap. 5, ver. 2 Blow ye the trumpet in the land : Cry aloud, and say. Assemble yourselves, and let us go Into the fortified cities. 6 Lift up a standard toward Zion : Bring (your belongings) into safety, stay not For I will bring misfortune from the north. And great destruction. 7 A lion has gone up from his thicket, And a destroyer of nations ; He has departed, gone forth from his place ; To make the earth a fright. Thy cities are laid waste Without inhabitant. 8 For this gird you with sackcloth. Wail aud howl : For will not turn back from us The fierce anger of Jehovah. 9 And it shall come to pass at that day, says Je hovah, The heart of the king shall perish. And the heart of the princes ; And the priests shall be affrighted. And the prophets shall be amazed. 10 And they shall say, Ah Lord Jehovah I Surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, Saying, Ye shall have peace : Whereas the sword reaches even unto the life. 11 At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem,A wind from the hottest bare heights in the wilderness (Comes) the way of the daughter, my people, Not to winnow and not to cleanse ; 12 Is a full wind [from these] come for me : Now will I also execute judgments against them. 13 Behold, he comes up as clouds. And his chariots are as the whirlwind : His horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us 1 for we are spoiled. 14 Wash thy heart from wickedness, O Jerusalem, That thou mayest be saved ; How long shall lodge within thee Thy pernicious thoughts? 15 For hark ! one proclaims from Dan, And publishes disaster ; 16 From the hill country of Ephraim they give warning to the nations,* They publish concerning Jerusalem, Behold, besiegers come, Prom a far country. And give out against the cities of Judah 17 Their voice round about. As keepers of a field are they against her'* ; cause me she has defied, says Jehovah. 18 Thy way and thy doings Have procured these things for thee ; This is thy wickedness, indeed it is bitter, Indeed it reaches even unto thy heart. 19 0 my bowels, my bowels 1 I have to writhe ; O walls of my heart ! Mu soul rages npon me My heart beats ; Because I * hear the sound of the trumpet. The shout of battle. 20 Destruction upon destruction is cried ; For the whole land is spoiled ; be- Suddenly are my tents spoiled, Iu a moment my curtains. 21 How long must I see the standard. And hear the sound of the trumpet ? 22 For my people are foolish. Me they do not know ; Sottish children are they, And they have no understanding : They are wise to do evil. But to do good they have no knowledge. 23 I beheld the earth. And, lo, it was empty and void ; And the heavens. And they had no light. 24 I beheld the mountains. And, lo, they trembled, And all the hills Moved to and fro. 25 I beheld ( ) And, lo, there was no man. And all the birds of the heavens Had fled. 26 I beheld the fruU/ul field And, lo,* It was a wilderness. And all the cities [thereof] were broken down Before Jehovah, Before his fierce anger. 27 For thus says Jehovah, The whole laud shall be a desolation ; Yet will I not make a full end. 28 For this shall the earth mourn. And the heavens above be black : Because I have spoken it,* and have not repented; / have purposed, and will not turn back from it. 29 At the noise of the horsemen and bowmen The whole land flees ; They go into the thickets. And climb up upon the rocks : Every city is forsaken. No man dwelling therein. 30 And thou, O spoiled woman. What wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with scarlet. Though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold. Though thou enlargest thine eyes with paint. In vain wouldest thou make thyself fair; (The) lovers despise thee, They seek thy life. 31 For I hear a sound as of a woman In travail, Shrieliins as of her that brings forth her first child. The voice of the daughter Zion, who gasps for breath, Who spreads out her hands, (saying), Woe to me now ! for succumbs My life to murderers. ' 1 Run ye to and fro through the J streets of Jerusalem, And see now, and know. And seek in the broad places thereof. If ye can find a man, If there be any that does justly, That seeks faithfulness ; §6. The Resultof Iniquity, 626-621 B. c. 10 And I will pardon her. And though they say. As Jehovah lives ; * They swear not aright. Chap. 5, ver. 3] JEREMIAH [Chap. 5, ver. 31 3 O Jehovah, are thine eyes set upon falsehood. Are they not upon faithfulness ? Thou hast smitten them, but they feel it not, Thou hast consumed them, they refuse to re ceive correction : They make their faces harder than a rock They refuse to return. 4 And I said. Surely they are poor people : they are foolish ; For they know not the way of Jehovah, The ordinance of their God : 5 I will get me unto the great men. And will speak with them. For they know the way of Jehovah, The ordinance of their God. But they, one and all, had broken the yoke. Had burst the thougs. 6 Therefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, A wolf of the steppes ; A leopard shall spoil them. Lurking about their cities ; Every one that goes out from them ShaU be torn in pieces : Because their rebellions are many Their revoltings are increased. 7 How can I pardon thee ? Thy sons have forsaken me. And sworn by them that are not God : When I had satisfied their desire, they committed adultery. And made themselves at home at the harlots' houses. 8 Horses aroused in passion Eager were they : Every one after his fellow's wife They neighed. 9 Shall I not punish for these things? Says Jehovah : And on such a nation as this Shall not my soul be avenged 10 Go ye up upon her vine-rows. And destroy ; But make not a full end : Take away her twigs : For they are not Jehovah's. 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very faithlessly against me, says Jehovah, 12 They lie against Jehovah, And say. Not he ; Neither will misfortune come upon us ; Neither shall we see sword or famine : 13 And the prophets will become wind. Having no word in them.* 14 Therefore thus says Jehovah, The God of hosts. Because theyi speak this word. Thus shall it be done to ihem. Behold, I will make my words Fire in thy mouth. And this people wood. And it snail devour them. 15 Lo, I will bring upon you A nation from far, O houise of Israel, says Jehovah : It is an indestructible nation. It is an ancient nation, A nation whose language thou knowest not. Neither understandest what they say. 16 Their quiver is an open sepulchre, They are all mighty men. 17 Aud they shall eat up thy harvest, and thy bread ; They shall eat up thy sons and thy daughters : They shall eat up thy flocks and thy herds : They shall eat up thy vines, (and thine oliTes) And thy fig trees, They shall beat down thy fortified cities, where in thou trustest, with the sword. 18 But even in those days, says Jehovah, I will not make a full end with you. 19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore has Jehovah our God done all these things to us ? that thou shalt say unto them. Like as ye have forsaken me. And served alien gods in your land. So shall ye serve strangers In a land that is not yours. 20 Declare ye this in the house of Jacob And publish it in Judah, saying, 21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding ; 'W'ho have eyes, and see not ; Who have ears, and hear not. 22 Fear ye not me ? says Jehovah : Or will ye not tremble at my presence, who has placed the sand for a bound of the sea, By a perpetual decree, which it cannot trans- And so Us waves toss themselves, but cannot prevail ; And * they roar, but cannot pass over it. 23 But to this people belongs a heart refractory and defiant ; They have turned aside and gone. 24 Neither say they in their heart. Let us fear now Jehovah our God, Who gives winter-rain [both] , the autumn-rain, and the spring-rain, in its season ; Who reserves for us the appointed weeks of harvest. 25 Your iniquities have turned away these things. And your sins have withholden good from you. 26 For among my people are found wicked men : They seize property ; Snares they set ; With traps they catch men. 27 Like a cage full of birds. So are their houses full of deceit : Therefore they have become great and waxen rich, 28 They are waxen fat. They plan wicked thi-n^s and s^icceed ; Also they violate * justice : They do not procure justice for the fatherless * * ; And the right of the needy they do not defend. 29 ShaU I not punish for these things? Says Jehovah : Or on such a nation as this shall not my soul be avenged ? 30 Frightful and horrible things Have come to pass in the land ; 31 The prophets prophesy falsely. And the priests teach' according to theli directions ; 1 Third person Is determined by the context. 11 1 With Micah 3 : 11. Chap. 5, ver. 31] JEREMIAH [Chap. 6, ver. 26 And my people love to have it so : And what will ye do at the end thereof ? The People, 626-621 B. c. 61 Bring (your belongings) into safety, ye sons of Benjamin, Out of the midst of Jerusalem, And blow the trumpet in Tekoa, And raise up a beacon on Beth- haccherem : For misfortune looks forth from the north, And great destruction. 2 Is a I refreshing pasture The height ofthe daughter Zion? 3 Shepherds shall come unto her With their flocks ; They pitch tents against her round about ; They feed every one oH his place. 4 Prepare ye war against her ; Arise and let us go up at noon : Woe unto us ! for the day declines, For the shadows [of evening] stretch them selves out : 5 Arise and let us go up by night. And let us destroy her foundations. 6 For thus said Jehovah of hosts, Hew ye down her trees. And cast up a mound against Jerusalem : ¦Woe to the marauding' city ; The whole of her — oppression ia in the midst of her. 7 As a well keeps fresh her water, So she keeps fresh her wickedness : Violence and plundering Are heard in her ; Before me continually, Wounds and blows. 8 Let thyself be corrected, O Jerusalem, Lest my soul be alienated from thee ; Lest I make thee a desolation, A land not inhabited. 9 Thus says Jehovah [of hosts]. Glean thoroughly as a vine The remnant of Israel : Turn back thy hand as a grapegatherer Upon the shoots. 10 To whom shall I speak, and testify, That they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised. And they cannot listen : Behold, the word of Jehovah has become to them a reproach ; They have no delight in it. 11 But I am full of the fury of Jehovah ; I am weary with enduring it : I must pour it out upon the children in the street. And upon the assembly of young men to gether : For [even] the husband with the wife shall be taken. The aged with him that is full of days. 12 And their houses shall be turned to others. Fields and wives together: For I will stretch out my hand Upon the inhabitants of the land, says Je hovah. 13 For from the least of them even unto the great est of them Every one of them is greedy of gain ; And from the prophet even unto the priest Every one of them deals falsely. 14 And they have treated the injury of my people Superficially, Saying, peace, peace ; When there is no peace. 15 They shall be put to shame because they have committed abomination : Yea, they are not at all ashamed, Neither do they know how to show confusion : Therefore they shall fall among them that fall: At the time of their visitation they shall stumble, Says Jehovah. 16 Thus said Jehovah, Stand ye upon the ways and see. And ask for (my paths). The old paths. Where is the way to prosperity, And walk therein. And ye shall find rest for your souls : But they said. We will not walk therein. 17 And I raised up over them ^watchmen, (say ing), Listen to the sound of the trumpet ; But they said, we will not listen. 18 Therefore hear, ye nations, And know the testimonies * that are among them. 19 Hear, O earth : Behold, I will bring misfortune upon this people, Even the fruit of their revolting. Because they have not listened nnto my word. man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah. 1 Ah! theshepherdsthatdestroy and scatter thesheepof their pasture, [says Jehovah]. 2 Therefore, thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds that feed my ?eople : e have scattered my flock, and driven them away, And have not visited them ; Behold, I will visit upon you The evil of your doings", [says Jehovah]. 3 And I will gather the remnant of rav flock Out of all the countries whither I have driven them. And will bring them again to their fold ; And they shall be fruitful and multiply. 23 Chap. 23, ver. 4] JEREMIAH [Chap. 23, ver. 3:? 4 And I will raise up shepherds over them and they shall feed them: and they shali fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor be terrified, says Jehovah. 5 Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, That I will raise up for David a righteous shoot. And he shall reign as king and rule wisely. And shall execute judgment and righteousness iu the land. 6 In his days Judah shall be saved, And Israel shall dwell safely : And this is his name by which he shall be called Jehovah is our righteousness. 7 Therefore, behold, the days come, says Jeho vah, that they shall no more say, As Jehovah lives who brought up the sons of Israel out of 8 the land of Egypt; but as Jehovah lives who [brought up, and who] caused the seed of the house of Israel to corae out of the north country, and from all the countries whither he had driven them ; and they shall dwell in their own land. 9 Respecting the prophets : My heart within rae is broken, All my bones are enfeebled ; I have become like a drunken man. And like a man whom wine has overcome ; Because of Jehovah, And because of his holy words. 10 For the land is full of adulterers ; §3. The Prophets, 595 B. c. For because of the curse the land mourns. The pastures of the wilderness are dried up. And their course is evil. And their might not right. 11 For both prophet and priest Are profane ; Yea, in my house I found their wickedness, Says Jehovah. 12 Therefore their way shall be to them As slippery places : Into darkness they shall be driven on And fall therein : For I will bring misfortune upon them. The year of their visitation, says Jehovah. 13 On the one hand, in the prophets of Samaria, I have seen tastelessness : They prophesied by Baal, And caused my people Israel to err. 14 Also in the prophets of Jerusalem, I have seen a horrible thing: Committing adultery, and walking in lies. And how they strengthened the hands of evil doers. That no man should return from his wicked ness. They all became to me as Sodom, And the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah. 15 Therefore, thus says Jehovah [of hosts] con cerning the prophets : Behold, I will feed them with wormwood. And make them drink the water of gall : For from the prophets of Jerusalem went forth Profaneness into all the land. 16 Thus says Jehovah of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy to you; They make fools of you : The vision of their own heart do they speak. And not out of the mouth of Jehovah. 17 Saying continually to them that despise the word of Jehovah, Ye shall have peace ; Aud (to) every one that walks in the stubborn ness of his own heart they say. No misfortune shall come upon you. 18 For who has stood in the council of Jehovah, And perceived [and heard! his word? W'ho has listened to my word And heard it ? 19 Behold, the tempest of Jehovah, His fury goes forth, And a cyclone Whirls over the head of the wicked. 20 The (fierce)^ anger of Jehovah will not re turn. Until he have executed, And till he have performed the purposes of his. heart: In the latter days ye shall understand it [per fectly] . 21 I sent not the prophets. Yet they ran : I spoke not unto them. Yet they prophesied. 22 But if they stand in my council, Then let them cause my people to hear my words, And turn them from their evil way. And from the evil of their doingb. 23 Am I a God at hand, says Jehovah, And not a God at a distance ? 24 Or can a man hide himself in secret places, And I not see him, [says Jehovah] ? Do not I fill heaven aud earth? Says Jehovah. 25 I hear what the prophets say, That prophesy lies in my name, saying, 26 I have dreamed, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. Will repent the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies. And that prophesy the deceit of their own heart ? 27 Who think to cause my people to forget my name By their dreams which they tell every man to his fellow, As their fathers forgot my name for Baal. 28 The prophet with whom there is a dream, Let him tell (his) dream And he with whora is my word. Let him speak my word faithfully, What is the straw to the wheat ? Says Jehovah, 29 Is not my word so ? Says Jehovah; Like a fire, And like a hammer that breaks rock irt pieces ? 30 Therefore, behold, I am against the prophete^ says Jehovah, That steal my words every one from his fellow. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, [says Je hovah], That take their tongue, and produce an oracle- 32 Behold, I am against the (prophets) That prophesy lying dreams, [says Jehovah], 1 With 30 : 25 Chap. 23, ver. 32] JEREMIAH [Cliap. 25, ver. 20 And tell them, and cause my people to err By their lies, and by their empty boasting : And I sent them not, nor commanded them ; Neither do they profit this people at all, [says Jehovah]. 33 And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is tne burden of Jehovah? Then shalt thou say unto them. Ye are the burden, aud I will cast you off, says 34 Jehovah. And as for the prophet, and the priest, and tlie people, that shall say, The burden of Jehovah, I will punish that man and his house. 35 Thus shall ye say every one unto his friend, and every one unto his brother. What has Je hovah answered ? and what has Jehovah spoken ? 36 And the bnrden of Jehovah shall ye mention no more : for the burden to a man will become his word. And ye have perverted the words of the liv- 37 ingGod,of Jehovah of hosts, our God. Thus shalt thou say unto the prophet. What has Jehovah answered thee ? and. What bas Jehovah spoken ? 38 But if ye say. The burden of Jehovah : Therefore, thus says Jehovah : Because ye say this word, Tbe burden of Jehovah, and Ihave sent unto you, saying. Ye shall not say. The burden 39 of Jehovah ; Therefore, behold, 1 -will indeed lift you up, and 1 will cast you off, and the city that I gave to you and to your fathers, away 40 from my presence ; and I will put an everlasting reproach upon yon, and perpetual confusion, which shall not be forgotten. ^ Jl I (Thus) Jehovah showed me, §*¦ //\ and, behold, two baskets of tigs c.„°, set before the temple of Jeho- Remainder vah ; after that Nebuchadrezzar king 5961,. 0. ' of Babylon had carried into exile Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the craftsmen and foreign troops from Jerusalem, and had 2 brought them to Babylon. The one basket had very good figs, like the figs that are lirst ripe ; and the other basket had very bad figs, which 3 eould not be eaten, they were so bad. And Jehovah said unto me. What seest thou, Jere miah? And I said. Figs; the good figs, very good; and the bad, very bad, that cannot he 4 eaten, they are so bad. And the word of Jeho vah came unto me, saying, 5 Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so Vt'ill I regard the captives of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans, for good. ^ For I will set mine eyes upon them for good, And I will bring them again unto chis land ; And I will build them, and not overthrow them. And I will plant them, and not pluck them up. 7 And I will give them a heart to know me. That I am Jehovah : And they shall be my people And I will be their God ; If they will return unto me With their whole heart. 8 And like the bad figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad ; IFoV] thus says Jehovah, So will I regard^ Zedekiah king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt, 9 /or misfortune: and I will make them a con sternation * to all the kingdoms of the earth ; a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in 10 all places whither I .shall drive them. And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pesti lence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land tha' I gave to them and to their fathers. -^r" 1 The word that came unto Jere- P%*,,^*' 7*-) miah concerning all the people „'?';, ^^'^ of Judah in the fourth year of sots, c' Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of , „ , Judah; [the same was the first year of Nebu- 2 eliadrezzar king of Babylon ;] which he spoke [Jeremiah the prophet] unto all the people of Judah, and unto all the inhabitants of Jeru- 3 salem, saying. From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even unto this day, a period of three and twenty years, [the word of Jehovah has come unto me, and] I have spoken unto you, rising early aud speaking ; 4 [but ye have not hearkened], and I have sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them ; but ye have not heark ened, nor inclined your ear [to hear] ; 5 saying. Return ye now every one from bis evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the laud that Jehovah has given to you and to your fathers, from of old and even for 6 evermore : and go not after other gods to serve them and to woi-ship them, that ye may not vex me with the work of your hands, and that I 7 bring no misfortune to you. But ye have not bearkened unto me, [says Jehovah ; that ye might vex me witb the work of your bands to your own hurt] . 8 Therefore, thus says Jehovah of hosts: Be- 9 cause ye have not heard my words. Behold, I will send and take [all] the family from tbe north, says Jehovah, [and unto Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, my servant], and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabit ants thereof, and against all the[se] nations round about ; and I will utterly devote them to destruction, and make them a fright, and a hiss- 10 ing, and an everlasting reproach. And I will take from them the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, tbe voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the clatter of the millstones, 11 and the ligbtof the candle ; and the whole ter ritory shall be [a waste] a fright: and the [se] nations shall serve [the king of Babylon] for seventy years. 12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish [the king of Babylon, and] that nation, [says Jehovah, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans ;] and I will make it everlasting desolations. 13 And I will brine upon that land all my words which I have spoKen against it, all that is writ ten in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied concerning all the nations. 14 For they themselves shall be held in subjection by many nations and great kings: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and accorciing to the work of their bands. 15 For thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, unto me : Take this cup of fermented wine at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send 16 thee, to drink it. And they shall driuk, and reel to and fro, and be mad, because of the sword 17 that I will .send among them. And I took the cup from Jehovah's hand, and made all the nations drink it, unto whom Jehovah had sent 18 me : namely, Jerusalem, and the citiesof Judah, and the kings thereof (and) the princes thereof, to make them a waste, a fright, (and) a hissing, 19 [and a curse, as it is this day] ; Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and bis princes, and all 20 hispeople; and all the foreign population, and all the kingsof [the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of] the Philistines, [and] Ashkelon, and 26 Chap. 25, ver. 20] JEEEMIAH [Chap. 26, ver. 20 Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod ; 21 Edom, and Moab, aud the sous of Ammon ; 2'^ and [all] the kiugs of Tyre, and [all] the kings of Zidon, and the kjngs of the coast land which 23 is beyond the sea; (and) Dedan, aud Tema, and Buz, and all that have the corners of their 24 hair shorn; and all [the kings of the] Arabians, [and all the kin^s of the foreign population] that 25 dwell in the wilderness; aud all the kings of Zirari, aud all the kings of Elam, and all the 26 kings of the Medes; and all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another ; and all the kingdoms [of the world], which are upon the face of the earth. And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thy hand to drink, then shalt thon say unto them, Thus says Jehovah [of 29 hosts] : Ye shall surely drink. For, lo, I begin to bring misfortune at the city which is called hy my name, and should ye be altogether un- punislied? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, [says Jehovah of hosts]. 30 And do thou prophesy unto them [all] these words, and say unto them, Jehovah shall roar frora on high, And utter his voice from his holy habitation ; Ee shall mightily roar over his dwelling place. He shall answer with a shout as they that tread the grapes. Unto all the inhabitants of the earth. 31 An uproar shall come even to the end of the earth : For Jehovah has a controversy with the nation.s. He will enter into judgment with all flesh : As for the wicked, he will give them, to the sword, [says Jehovah]. 32 Thus says Jehovah [of hosts], Behold, misfortune shall go torth From nation to nation. And a great tempest shall be stirred np, From the recesses of the earth. 33 And the slain of Jehovah shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth : they shall not be bewailed, neither gathered, nor be buried; they shall be as dung upou the face of the ground. 34 Howl, ye shepherds, and cry out. And wallow in ashes, ye principal of the flock: For the days for your slaughter have fully come. And ye shall [be broken in pieces and] fall like choice Iambs. 35 And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, Nor the principal of the flock to escape. 36 Hark ! the cry of the shepherds, And the howling of the principal of the flock; For Jehovah lays waste their pasturage, 37 And the peaceful pastures are destroyed. It may be they will hear, and turn every man from his evil way, and I may repent concerning: the misfortune, which I purpose to do to them because of the evil of their doings. 4 And thou shalt say unto them, Thus says Je hovah : If ye will not liearken unto me, to walk 5 in my law, which I have set before you, to hearken unto the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, [and] rising early and sending them, but ye have not heark- 6 ened; then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth. 7 And the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in 8 the houseof Jehovah. And it came to pass when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that Jehovah had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets [and all the peoplep laid hold of him, saying, 9 Thou shalt surely die. Wherefore hast thou prophesied in the name of Jehovah, saying. This house shall be like Shiloh, and this" city shall be wasted, without inhabitant? And all the people gathered together unto Jeremiah in the house of Jehovah. 10 And the princes of Judah heard these things, and they came up from the king's house to the house of Jehovah ; and they sat in the entry of 11 the new gate of Jehovah's (house).^ And said the priests and the prophets unto the princes and unto all the people, saying. This man is worthy of death, for he has prophesied concerning this city, as ye have heard with your ears. 12 And said Jeremiah unto [all] the princes and unto all the people, saying, Jehovah sent me to prophesy concerning^ this house and con cerning* this city all the words that ye have 13 heard. And now amend your ways and your doings, and hearken to the voice of Jehovah your God ; that Jehovah may repent ofthe mis- 14 fortune that he spoke concerning you. But as for me, behold, I am in your hand : do to me as 15 is good and right in your eyes. Only know ye for certain that if ye put me to death, innocent blood ye will bring upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon the inhabitants thereof: for in truth Jehovah has sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears. 16 And said the princes and all the people unto the priests and unto the prophets : This man is not worthy of death, for he has spoken unto us 17 in the name of Jehovah our God. And rose up certain of the elders of the land, and said unto 18 all the assembly of the people, saying, Micaiah the Morashtite was prophesying in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah ; and he said unto all the people of Judah, saying, Thus says Jehovah of hosts : Zion shall be plowed like a field. And Jerusalem shall become heaps. And the mountain of the house as the high place of a forest. 19 Did Hezekiah [king of Judah] andall Judah put him at all to death ? did they not fear Jehovah, and entreat the favor of Jehovah ? and Jehovah repented of the misfortune which he had spoken concerning them : and we are about to work great misfortime upon ourselves. 20 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of Jehovah, Uriah the son of Shemaiah 3 WlUi GGTeral ancient Trss.; 36 : 10. 27 Chap. 26, ver. 20] JEREMIAH [Chap. 28, ver. 14- of Kiriath-jearim ; and he prophesied [concern ing this city and] concerning this land accord- 21 ing to all the words of Jeremiah : and heard Jehoiakim the king, and all his mighty men, and all the princes, his words, and the king sought to put bim to death ; but Uriah heard it, 22 and was afraid, and fled , and went to Egypt : and [Jehoiakim] the king sent men to Egypt, Elna than, the son of Achbor, and certain men with 23 him, into Egypt : and they brought forth Uriah out of Egypt, and caused him to eome unto [Jehoiakim] the king ; and he smote him witb tlie sword, and cast his dead bodv unto the graves 21 of the common people. But as for you, hearken ye not unto your prophets, nor unto your diviners, nor unto your dreamers, nor unto your soothsayers, nor nnto j'our sorcerers, who speak unto yon, saying. Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon : 10 for they prophesy a lie to you, to remove you far from your land ; [and that I should drive you 11 out and ye should perish]. But the nation that shall bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, (that nation) will I let remain in their own land, says Jebovah ; and they shall till it, and dwell therein. 12 And I spoke unto Zedekiah king of Judah ac cording to all these words, saying. Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, 13 and serve him and his people, and live. Why will ye die, thou and thy people, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, as Jehovah has spoken concerning the nation that will 14 not serve the king of Babylon ? And hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you, saying. Ye shall not serve the king of 15 Babvlon : for thev prophesy a lie to you. For I have not sent them, sa.vs Jehovah, but they prophesy falsely in my name, that I might drive you out, and that ye might perish, ye, and the prophets that prophesy to you. 16 Also I spoke unto the priests and unto all this people, saying, Thus says Jehovah : Hearken not unto the words of your prophets that proph esy to yon, saying. Behold, the vessels of Jeho vah's house shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon : for they prophesy a lie to you. 17 Hearken not unto them; serve the king of Babylon, and live: wherefore should this city become a waste? 18 But if they be prophets, and if the word of Je hovah be with them, let them now make inter cession to Jehovah of hosts, that the vessels. which are left in the house of Jehovah, and in the house of the king of Judah. and at Jerusa- 19 lem, go not to Babylon. For thus says Jehovah of hosts concerning the columns, and concern ing the sea, and concerning the pedestals, and concerning the residue of tbe vessels that are left. 20 in this city, ivhich [Nebuchadnezzar] the king of Babvlon took not, when he carried away cap tive Jc'coniah [the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah], from Jerusalem to Babylon, and all the 21 nobles of Judah and Jerusalem; yea, thus says Jehovah ot hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that are left in the houseof Jehovah, and in the houseof the king of Judah, and at 22 Jerusalem : they shall be carried to Babylon, and there shall they be, until the day that I visit them, says Jehovah, and bring them up, and restore them unto this place. 28 1 And it came to pass in the §2 same year, [in the beginning Jeremiah 28 ^}i^^ y^^C^*^-^^ in the fourth HaDaDi^ih, year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in 593 b. c. the fifth month, that Hananiah. the son of Azzur, the prophet who was of Gibeon^ spoke [unto me] in the house of Jehovah, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, 2 saying, Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, i have broken the yoke of the 3 king of Babylon. Within two years' time will I bring again "unto this place all the vessels of Je hovah's house, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place, and carried 4 them to Babylon : and I will bring again unto- this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and [all] the captives of Judah, that went to Babylon, says Jeho rah : for I will break 5 the yoke of the king of Babylon. Then Jere miah [the prophet] said unto Hananiah [the prophet] in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people that stood in the 6 house of Jehovah, and Jeremiah [the prophet] said, Amen : Jehovah do so : Jehovah perform thy words which thou hast prophesied, to bring- again the vessels of Jehovah's house, and all them of the captivity, from Babylon unto this 7 place. Nevertheless hear thou now this word that I speak in thine ears, and in the ears of all 8 the people : The prophets that have been befcire me and before thee of old prophesied coneorn- ing- many countries, and concerning great king doms, of war, [and of misfortune, and of pesti- 9 lence]. The prophet who prophesies of peace^ when his word shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that Jehovah hastrulv 10 sent him. Then Hananiah [the prophet] took the bar from off [the prophet] Jeremiah's neck,. H and broke it. And Hananiah spoke in the pres ence of all the people, saying. Thus says Jeho vah ; Even so will I break the yoke of [Nebu chadnezzar] the king of Babylon within two full years from off the neck of ail the nations. And Jeremiah [the prophet] went his way. 12 Then the word of Jehovah came unto Jere miah, after that Hananiah [the prophet] had 13 broken the bar from off liis neck, saying. Go and tell Hananiah, saying. Thus savs Jehovah • Thou hast broken the hars of wood, but I will 14 make in their stead bars of iron. For thus says Chap. 28, ver. 14] JEEEMIAH [Chap. 29, ver. 32 Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel : I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all the[se] na tions, that they may serve [Nebuchadnezzar] the king of Babylon ; and they shall serve him : aud I have given him the beasts of the field also. 15 And said Jeremiah [the prophet] unto Hana niah [the prophet], Hear now, Hananiah; Je hovah has not sent thee ; but thou makest this 16 people to trust in a lie. Therefore, thus says Je hovah, Betaold, I will send thee away from off the face of the earth : this year thou shalt die, because thou hast spoken rebellion against Je- 17 hovah. So Hananiah [the prophet] died the same year iu the seventn month. ^f\ 1 Now these are the words of §3 / V the letter that Jeremiah [the Communica- ^^ ^ prophetj sent from Jerusalem exuIs unto the residue of the elders of 595 b. c. the exiles, and unto the priests, aud unto the prophets, and unto all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile 2 frora Jerusalem to Babylon : after the going forth of Jeconiah the king, and the queen- mother, and the eunuchs, (and) the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen, and 3 the foreign troops, from Jerusalem ; by tlie hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Ju dah sent to Babylon unto [Nebuchadnezzar] the king of Babylon, saying, A Thus says Jehovsdi [of hosts], the God of Is rael, to all the exiles, whom I have caused to be taken into exile from Jerusalem [to Babylon] : 5 Build ye houses, and dwell (iu themj ; And plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them : 6 Take ye wives, And beget sons and daughters : And take wives for your sons. And give your daughters to husbands. That they may bear sons and daughters ; And multiply ye there, and be not diminished. 7 And seek the peace of the land Whither I nave caused you to be taken into exile. And pray unto Jehovah for it : For in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. 8 For thus says Jehovah [of hosts, the God of Israel] : Let not deceive you your prophets that are in the midst of you. And your diviners, Neither hearken ye unto tlieir ^ dreams Which they 1 are dreaming ; 9 For they prophesy falsely to you in my name: I have not sent them, [says Jehovah]. 10 For thus says Jehovah, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you. And perform my good word toward you, In causing you to return to this place. 11 For I know the thoughts That I think toward you, [says Jehovah], Thoughts of peace, and not respecting mis fortune, To give you a promising future. 12 And ye shall call upon me, and I will deliver you; And ye shall pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, When ye shall search for me with all your heart. • 14 And I will appear to you, says Jehovah, And I will change your fortunes, And I will gather you from all the nations. And from all the places whither I have driven you, says Jehovah ; Aud I will bring you again unto the place Whence I caused you to be taken into exile, 15 In that ye have said, Jehovah has raised us up prophets in Babylon. 16 For thus says Jehovah concerning- the king that sits upon the throne of David, and con cerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that have uot gone forth with you 17 into exile, thus says Jehovah of hosts: Behold, I will send amoug them the sword, the famine and the pestUence, aud will make them like vile 18 figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad. And I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, aud with the pestilence, and will make them a consternation to all the kingdoms of tlie earth, to be an execration, and a fright, and a hissing, aud a reproach, among all the nations 19 whither I have driven them : because they have not hearkened unto my words, says Jehovah, wherewith I sent unto them my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them ; but 20 they did not hear, says Jehovah. Hear ye therefore the word of Jehovah, all ye exiles, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21 Thus says Jehovah [of hosts, the God of Israel] , concerning; Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning- Zedekiah the sou of Maaseiali, who prophesy a lie to you in my name : Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of [Nebuchad rezzar] the king of Babylon, and he shall slay 22 them before your eyes; and of them shall be taken up a curse for all the exiles of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, Jehovah make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the 23 king of Babylon roasted with fire : because they wrought folly in Israel, and committed adultery with the wives of their fellows, and spoke words in my name [falsely] , which 1 commanded them not ; "and I myself know, and am witness, says Jehovah. 24 And unto Shemaiah the Nehelamite thou shalt 25 speak, saying, Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying. Because thou didst send letters in thine own name unto all the people there are at Jerusalem, and unto Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and unto all the 26 priests, saying, Jehovah has- made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, to be an ofiicer in the house of Jehovah for every man that is mad, and makes himself a prophet, that thon shouldest put him in the stocks and in the collar. 27 Now, therefore, why hast thou not rebuked Jere miah of Anathoth, who makes himself a prophet 28 to you. forasmuch as he has sent unto us to Babylon, saying, (The captivity) is long: Build ye houses and dwell (in them); And plant 29 gardens and eat the fruit of them. And Zeph aniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then came the word of Jehovah nnto Jere- 31 miah, saying, Send unto all the exiles, saying, Thus says Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Becausethat Shemaiah has prophe sied unto you, and I sent hira not, and he has 32 caused yon to trust in a lie ; Therefore, thus says Jehovah, Behold, I will punish Shemaiati the Nehelamite, and his seed ; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, says Jehovah : because he has spoken rebellion against Jehovah. 1 With ver. 9. 29 Chap. 30, ver. 1] JEREMIAH [Chap. 31, ver. 5 O/^ 1 The word that eame unto Part IX. ^M Jeremiah from Jehovab, say- ^he Boot of ^^ —^ ins CoQsolalion. 2 Thus says Jehovah, the God of Is- ^'"^' **'¦ "' "¦ rael, sayiug. But of thee I will not make a full end ; But I will correct thee according to judgment. Though 1 cannot altogether hold thee guiltless. 12 [For] thus says Jehovah, Thine injury is incurable for me. Thy wound is grievous: 13 There are no [pleading thy cause] remedies for (thy) sore. There is no healing for thee. 14 All thy lovers forget thee, They care not for thee : For I have smitten thee with ferocious blows, With cruel chastisement ; For the greatness of thine iniquity. And I vvill heal thee of thy wounds, says Jehovah ; Because they have called thee, Zion, an out cast. Whom no one cares for. 18 Thus savs Jehovah, Behold,'! will change the fortunes of Jacob's tents. And have compassion on his dwelling places ; Aud the city shall be built upon her own mound, Aud the citadel shall be inhabited upon its customary place. 19 And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving. And my people shall be satisfied with my bounty, [says Jehovah]. 15 Thus says Jehovah : A voice is heard iu Ramah, lamentation. Bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her sons ; She refuses to be comforted [for her sons, be cause they are no more]. 16 Thus says Jehovah : Refrain thy voice from weeping, And thine eyes from tears : For there is a reward for thy work, [says Jeho vah], And they shall return from the land of the enemy. 17 And there is hope for thy latter end, says Jeho vah, And (thy) sons shall return to their own border. 18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself : Thou hast corrected me, and I let myself be corrected, As an untrained calf ; Bring me back, tuat I may return For thou art Jehovah my God. 19 [For having turned and] having been instructed^ I have repented, I have smitten upon my thigh : 1 am put to shame, yea, even disgraced, Because I do bear [the] reproach [of my youth]. 20 Is Ephraim my dear son ? For Jehovah has created a new thing in the earth, A woman goes about like a man. 23 Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel : Yet again shall they use this speech in the land of Judah, and in the cities thereof, when IshaU change their fortunes : Jehovah blesses thee, O seat of righteousness, O holy mountain, 24 And the inhabitants of [in it] Judah, and all the cities thereof, Together the husbandmen, and they that go about with flocks ; 25 For I have satiated weary souls. The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the sons' 30 teeth are set on edge ; but every one shall die for his own iniquity ; every man that eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set ou edge. 31 Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will make with the house of Israel and with 32 the house of Judah a new covenant : not ac cording to the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt ; because they broke my covenant, and I rejected them, 33 says Jehovah. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Jehovah ; I will put my law in their inward parts, And upon their heart will I write it ; And I will be their God, And they shall be my people : 1 with Isa. 42 : 11. 31 Chap. 31, ver. 34] JEREMIAH [Chap. 32, ver. 35 34 And they shall teach no more a man his friend, aud a man his brother, saying. The Betura. §1. '^'^ 1 The word that came unto Jr%/^ Jeremiah from Jehovah in the tenth year of Zedekiah, king of Judah, which was the ita 24 eighteenth year of Nebuchadrez- Certainty, 2 zar. Now at that time the king of 587 b. c. Babylon's army besieged Jeru salem : and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king 3 of Judah's house, where Zedekiah the king [of 25 Judah] had shut him up, saying. Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus says Jehovah, Be hold, I will give this city into the hand of the ¦4 king of Babylon, and he shall take it; and Zedekiah [king of Judah] shall not escape out 26 of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Bab- 27 ylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, 28 5 and his eyes shall behold his eyes ; and to Bab ylon shall he lead Zedekiah, and there shall he be until I visit him, says Jehovah : if ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper. 29 6 And Jeremiah said, The word of Jehovah 7 came unto me, saying. Behold, Hanamel the son of ShaUum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Ana thoth : for the right of redemption is thine to 30 8 buy it. So Hanamel mine uncle's son came unto me [according to the word of Jehovah], nnto the court of the guard, and said unto me. Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, 31 [whicH is in the land of Benjamin :] for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemp tion is thine ; buy it for thyself. Then I knew 9 that this was the word of Jehovah. And I 32 bought the field [that was in Anathoth] of Hanamel mine uncle's son, and weighed hira [the money, even] seventeen shekels of [the] 10 silver. And I wrote it upon a paper, and sealed it, and called witnesses, and weighed out the 33 11 money with the scales. And I took the deed of the purchase, that which was sealed, [the com mandment and the statutes, and that which was 12 open :J and I delivered it [the deed of the pur- 34 chase] unto Baruch the son of Keriah, the son of Manseiah, in the presence of Hanamel mine 35 uncle's (son) and in the presence of the wit nesses that subscribed the deed of the purchase, 32 (and) in the presence of all the Jews that sat in the court of the guard. And I charged Baruch before them, saying, Thus says Jehovah of hosts, [the God of Israel :] Take [these deeds,] this deed of the purchase, J^both that which is sealed,] and tlic public notice, and put them in an earthen vessel ; that they may continue many days. For thus says Jehovah [of hosts, the God of Israel], Houses aud flelds and vineyards shall yet again be bought in this land. And I prayed unto Jehovah after I had de livered the deed of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, saying. Ah ! Jehovab God ; behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and hy thy stretched out arm; there is nothing too hard for thee: who showest mercy to thousands, and recom- pensest the iniquity of fathers unto the bosom of their sons after them : the great, the mighty God, Jehovah of hosts is bis name ; great in counsel, and mighty in work : whose eyes are [open] upon [all] the ways of the sons of men, to give every one according to his ways, ["and according to the fruit of his doings] : who bast set signs and wonders from the land of Egypt and unto this day,* in Israel and among man kind ; and hast made thee a name, as at this day ; and didst bring forth thy people Lsrael out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and w ith great terror ; and gavest them this land, wbich thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey ; and they came in and pos sessed it ; but they bearkened not to thy voice, neither walked in thy law ; they have done nothing of all that thou commandest them to do : therefore thou hast caused all this misfortune to come upon them : behold the mounds have reached the city to take it: and the city must fall into the hand of the Chaldeans that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence : and what thou hast spoken has come to pass ; and, behold, thou seest It. And thou sayest unto me, O Jehovah God, Buy thee the field for money, and call wit nesses ; whereas the city must fall into the band of the Chaldeans. Then came the word of Jehovab unto me, saying. Behold, I am Jehovah, the God of all flesh : is there anything too hard for me ? Therefore thus says Jehovah : Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the [Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar] king of Babylon, and he shall take it: and the Chaldeans, that flght against this city, shall come and set this city on fire, and burn it. with the houses, upon whose roofs they have hurned sacrifice to Baal, and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to pro voke me to anger. For the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have done only that which was evil in my sight from their youth : for the sons of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, savs Jehovah. For this city has been to me the object of mine anger and of my fury from the day that thev built it even unto this day ; that I shonld remove it from before my face : because of all the evil of the sons of Israel and of the sons of Judah which they have done to provoke me to anger' they, their kings, their princes, their priests' and their prophets, [and] the men of Judah' and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And thev have turned unto me the back, and not th'e face: and though I taught them rising earlv and teaching them, yet thev have not heark'- ened to receive discipline. But thev set their detestable things in the house which i's called bv my name, to defile it. And thev built the high places of Baal, which are in the vallev of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their Chap. 32, ver. 35] JEEEMIAH [Chap. 34, ver. 3 daughters to pass (thronsli the fire) to Molech ; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this 35 a'Dominatiou, to cause Judah to sin. And now [therefore] thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning; this city, whereof ye say. It must fall into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pesti- 37 lence : Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I 38 will cause them to dwell safely : and they shall 39 be my people, and I will he their God : and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever; to the end that good may 40 come to them, and to their sons after them : and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that 1 will not turn away from after them, [to do them good] ; and I will put my fear in their 41 heart, that it may not depart from me. And I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them faithfully iu this land, with my 42 whole heart and with my whole soul. For thus says Jehovah : According as I have brought all this great misfortune npon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have 43 promised them. And (again) fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say. It is desolate, without man or beast, it must fall into 44 the hand of the Chaldeans. Men shall buy fields for monev, and subscribe the deeds, and seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Ben jamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill-country, and in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the south : for I will change their fortunes, says Jebovah. ¦^^1 And the word of Jehovah §2. For thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are to be torn down for mounds, and for the barricade, 5 when they begin to fight with the Chaldeans, and which are to be fllled with the dead bodies of men, whom I liave smitten in mine anger and in my fury, and from whom I have hid my face, 6 because of all their wickedness. Behold, I will make new flesh grow to it and (will induce) healing, [and I will heal them] ; and I will re- 7 veal to them ways of abiding peace. And I will change the fortunes of Judah and the for tunes of Israel, and will build them as at the S first; and I will cleanse them from all their in iquity, whereby they have sinned against me, and I will pardon all their iniquities, [whereby they have sinned against me, and] whereby they 9 have rebelled against me. And Jerusalem shall be for joy, for praise, and for glory, to all the nations of the earth, which shall hear of all the good that I do [them], and shall fear aud tremble concerning all the good and concerning all the peace tbat I procure for it. 10 Thus says Jehovah : Again there shall be heard in this place, whereof ye say. It is waste, with out man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are devastated, without man [and without inhabit- 11 ant] , and without beast, the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the voice of tbe bride groom and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that say. Give thanks to Jehovah of hosts, for Jehovah is good, for his mercy (endures) for ever: (and) of them that bring thank offerings into the bouse of Jehovah ; for 1 will change the fortunes of the land as at the first, says Jehovah. 12 Thus says Jehovah of hosts : Again there shall be in this place which is waste, without men and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, a pasturage for shepherds causiug their flocks to 13 lie down ; in the cities of the hill-country, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the south, and in the laud of Benjamin, and in tlie places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks again pass by the bauds of him that counts them, says Jehovah. 14 Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will perform thatgood word which 1 havespokeu concerning; the bouse of Israel and concern- 15 ing the house of Judah. In those days, and at that time, will I cause a shoot of righteousness to grow up for David, and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah shall be saved. And Jerusalem shall dwell safely : And this is (her name) by wbich she shall he called, Jehovah is our righteousness. 17 Forthus says Jehovah: David shall never lack a man to sit upon the throne of the house of 18 Israel ; neither shall the priests the Levites lack a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to burn oblations, and to do sacrifice continually. 19 And the word of Jehovah came nnto Jeremiah, 20 saying. Thus says Jehovah: If can be broken the covenant of the day, and the covenant of the night, [and] that there should not be day 21 and night in their seasou ; then can also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne, and with the Levites the priests, my ministers. 22 As 2 the host of heaven cannot be numbered. Neither the sand of the sea measured ; So will I multiply the seed of David my servant, And the Levites that minister to me. 23 And the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, saying, 24 Considered thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which Jehovab chose, be has cast them off? Thus do they de spise my people, that they should be no more a 25 nation before me.^ Thus says Jehovah : If I have not created day and night, if I bave not 26 flxed the ordinances of heaven and earth ; then will I also cast away [the seed of Jacob, and of] David my servant, so as not to take of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob : for I will change their fortunes, and will have compassion on tbem. 34 1 The word that carae unto Part XI. At the end of seven years ye shall let go every man his brother that is a Hebrew, who has sold himself to thee, and has served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their 15 ear. But thev said, We will drink no wine : for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neitlier ye, nor your .'¦ons, 7 for ever : neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor shall [ye plant] vineyard [nor shall it] be yours : but all your days ye shall dwell in tents ; that ye may live many days in the land 8 wherein ye sojourn. And we have hearkened 1x1 the voice of Jehonadab the son of Rechab our father [in all that he commanded us], to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, 9 our sons, and our daughters ; nor to build bouses for us to dwell in ; and that we should have 10 neither vineyard, nor fleld, nor seed : and we have dwelt in tents, and have hearkened, and done according to all that Jonadab our father 11 commanded us. But it came to pass, whcii Kebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come aiid let us goto Jt-rn- salem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of Aram ; so we settled in Jerusalem. 12 Theu came the word of Jehovah unto me, saying, 13 Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel : Go and say to the men of Judah and the inhabi tants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive disci- cipline to hearken unto my words? says Je- 14 hovah. The words of Jehonadab the son of Rechab, in which he commanded his sons not to drink wine have been performed, and unto this day they have drunk none, for they bave heard their father's commandment : but I have spoken unto you, rising early and speakii ig, and ye have 15 not hearkened [unto me]. I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying. Return ye now every man frora his evil way, and araend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and dwell in the land whieh I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined 16 your ear, nor hearkened unto me. For the sons of Jehonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father (which he commanded them], but this people have not 17 hearkened nnto me ; therefore, thus says Jeho vah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel : Be hold, I will bring upon Judah and npon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the misfortune that I bave pronounced upon them : because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard and I bave called to them, but tbey have not answered. 18 And to the house of the Recbabites Jeremiah said: 1 With some aacieat Vrss. 34 Chap. 35, ver. 18] JEREMIAH [Chap. 37, ver. 6 Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel : Because ye have hearkened unto the command ment of Jehonadab your father, [aud kept all his precepts] , and done according to all that he 19 commanded you ; therefore, thus says Jehovah of hosts, tbe God of Israel : Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before me for ever. O /" 1 And It came to pass in the Part XIV. 3(5 fourth year of Jehoiakim the Jeremiai son of Josiah, king of Judah, jchSim that this word came unto Jeremiah joi, 603, b. o. 2 from Jehovah, saying. Take thee a roll of a tiook, aud write npon it all the words that I bave spoken unto thee concerning Jeru salem, and concerning Judah, and concern ing all the nations, from the day 1 spoke unto thee, from the days of Josiah (king' of Ju- S dah), even unto this day. It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the misfortune which I purpose to do to them ; that they may return every man from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin. 4 And Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all tbe words of Jehovah, which he had spoken 5 unto him, upon a roll of a book. And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I ara restrained, I 6 cannot go into the house of Jehovah : but go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast writ ten from my mouth, the words of Jehovah in the ears of tbe people iu Jehovah's house upon a fast day ; and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities. 7 It may be that their supplication will fall before Jebovah, and that they will return every one from his evil way : for great is the auger and the fury that Jehovah has pronouuced upon this 8 people. And Baruch [the son of Neriah] did according to all that Jeremiah [the prophet] commanded him, reading in the book the words of Jehovah in Jehovah's house. 9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoia kim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that all the people in Jerusalem, and all the people that came from the cities of Judah, proclaimed a fast before Jehovah [in 10 Jerusalem]. Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the bouse of Jehovah, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan, the secretary, in the upper court, atthe entrance of the new gate of Jehovah's house, in the ears 11 of all the people. And heard Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, all the words 12 of Jehovah out of the book, and he went down to the king's house, unto the secretary's cham ber ; and, lo, all the princes sat there, Elishama the secretary, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, aud Ehiathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of 13 Hananiah, and all the princes. Then Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the 14 people. Thereupon all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the sou of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto Baruch, saying. Take in thy hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come down. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand, 15 and went unto them. And they said unto him, sit down now, and read it in our ears. SoBaruch 16 read it in their ears. And it came to pass, when they bad heard all the words, they looked upou one another in terror, and said [unto Baruch] , We must surely tell the king of all these words. 17 And they asked Baruch, saying. Tell us now, how didst thou write all these words [at his 18 mouth] ? Then Baruch answered them, Jere miah pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them upon the book with 19 my hand. Then said the princes unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah, and let no man know where ye are. 20 And they went in unto the king to his cham ber,! i)ut they had laid up the roll in the cham ber of Elishama the secretary, and they told all 21 the(se) words in the ears of the king. And the king sent Jehudi to bring the roll : and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all tbe princes who stood beside 22 the king. Now the king sat in the winter house [in the ninth month] : and the lire of the brazier 23 was burning before him. Aud it came to pass, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that (the king) cut it with the penknife, aud cast it into tbe flre that was upon the brazier, until all the roll (had been thrown) into the 24 flre that was upon the brazier. And they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor [any of] his servants that heard all 25 these words. Moreover Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had entreated the king that lie would not burn the roll, but he did not hearken 26 unto them. And the king commanded Jerah- meel the king's son, and Seraiab the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but Jehovab hid them. 27 Then the word of Jehovah came unto Jere miah, after tbat the king had burned the roll, all the words which Baruch wrote at the moutb of Jeremiah, saying, 28 Take thee again another roll, and write [upon it] all the [former] words that were upon the [first] roll, which Jehoiakim the king [of Judah] 29 burned. And concerning Jehoia, kim king of Judah thou shalt say. Thus says Jehovah : Thou hast burned this roll, saying. Why hast thou written upon it, saying. The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from theuce man and beast ? 30 Therefore, thus says Jehovah concerning Jehoia kim king of Judah, He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David ; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in 31 the night to the frost. And I will punish him, and his seed, and his servants, for their iniquity ; and I will bring upon them, and upou the in habitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all tbe misfortune that I have spoken concerning them, and they hearkened not. 32 And Jeremiah took another roll, and gave it uuto Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, and he wrote upon it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah bad burned in the fire : and there were added besides to them mauy like words. •^ »7 1 And Zedekiah the sou of Part XV. ' Jeremiah tbe prophet. 3 And the king Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, unto Jeremiah [the prophet], saying, 4 Pray now unto Jehovah our God for us. Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people, for they had not put him into prison. 5 And Pharaoh's army bad come forth out of Egypt, and the Chaldeans that besieged Jeru salem had heard tidings of them and had reliu- 6 quished the siege of Jerusalem. Then came tbe ' See 1 Kings 1 : 15. 35 Chap. 37, ver. 6] JEREMIAH [Chap. 38, ver. 24 word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah [tbe prophet] , saying, 7 Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel : Thus shalt thou say unto the king of Judah, who sent [you] unto thee to inquire of me : Behold, Pharaoh's army, which came forth to help you, 8 shall return to the[ir] land of Egypt. And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and tbey shall take it, and burn it with 9 fire. Thus says Jehovah : Deceive not your selves, saying. The Chaldeans shall surely de- 10 part from us: for they shall not depart. For if had been smitten i the whole army of the Chal deans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among thera each in his tent, then would (these) arise and burn this city with fire. 11 And it came to pass that when the army of the Chaldeans had relinquished the siege of Jeru- 12 salem for fear of Pharaoh's army, then Jeremiah went forth from Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to receive bis portion there, iu the 13 midst of the people. And when he was in tlie gate of Benjamin, a sentinel was there, wliose name was Irijah, the sonof Shelemiah, the sou of Hananiah ; and he laid hold on Jeremiah [the 14 prophet], saying. Thou fallest away unto the Chaldeans. Then said Jeremiah, It is false ; I fall not away unto the Chaldeans. But Irijah hearkened not unto [him and laid hold ou] Jeremiah, but had him go unto the princes. 15 And the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and sent bim [to the house of bonds] , to the house of Jonathan tbe scribe ; for they 16 had made tbat tbe prison. And so Jeremiah came unto the well-house, and unto the vaults, and [Jeremiah] remained there many days. 17 And [the kiugj Zedekiah sent, and brought bim, and the king asked him secretly [in his bouse], and said. Is there any word from Jeho vah? And Jeremiah said. There is. [He said also,] Thon shalt be delivered into the hand of 18 the king of Babylon. Aud Jeremiah said unto tbe king [Zedekiah] , Wherein have I sinned respect ing thee, or respecting thy servants, or respecting this people, that ye bave put me in prison? 19 Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you saying. The king of Babylon shall not 20 come unto you, nor unto this land ? And now hear, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, fall before thee ; that thou cause me not to return to tbe house of 21 Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there. And the king [Zedekiah] commanded, and they cora- mittetl Jeremiah inro the court of the guard, and they gave him daily a loaf of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city was gone. Aud Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard. -^ O 1 And Shephatiah the son of §2. ¦^O Mattan, and Gedaliah the son Jereaiiah '^^^ of Pashhur, and Jucalthesou zcdekiah of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son sge b. c' of Malchiah, heard the words that 2 Jeremiah spoke uuto all the people, saying. Thus says Jehovah, He that abides in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and ijy the pestilence : but he that goes forth to the Chal- deaus shall live, and his life shall be to him for 3 a prey, [and he shall live] .'¦' Thus says Jehovah, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall 4 take it. Then the princes said uuto the king. Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death ; forasmuch as he weakens the hands of tbe men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them : for this man seeks not the welfare of this 5 people, but the hurt. Aud the king [Zedekiah] 1 Third person demanded by context. said. Behold, he is in your hand : for the king was not oue that could do anything with them. 6 Then took they Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard : and they let (him) [Jeremiah] dowu with cords. And in the cistern there was no water, but mire : and he [Jeremiah] sank in the mire. 7 Novv Ebed-melech the Ethiopian,' a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern ; and since the king was then sitting in the gate of Benjamin, 8 Ebed-melech went forth out of tbe king's house, 9 and spoke unto the king, saying, My lord the king, these men have done evil in [all] that which they bave done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the cistern, iu order to put him to death with hunger in the place where he is, because there is no more bread in the 10 city. Then the king commanded Ebed-melech [the Ethiopian], saying. Take from hence three ^ men with thee, and take [Jeremiah the prophet] (him) up out of the cistern before he 11 die. So Ebed-melech took the men [with him] , and went to the house of the king unto the place underneath the store room, and took thence old rags frora draggled and tattered garments, and let them down by cords into the cistern uuto 12 Jeremiah. And [Ebed-melech the Ethiopian] said [unto Jeremiah] , Put now the old rags from draggled and tattered garments under thine armpits, under the cords. And Jeremiah did so. 13 Then they drew him with tbe cords, and took him up out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the 14 guard. And the king [Zedekiah] sent, and took (him) [Jeremiah the prophet] unto him unto the entrance of the body guards that is in the bouse of Jehovah : and tbe king said unto iiim, I will ask thee a thing ; bide nothing from me. 15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it to thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death ? and if I give thee counsel, thou wiltnot hearken 16 unto me. Then the king [Zedekiah] swore [secretly] nnto Jereraiah, saying. As Jehovah lives, who has procured for us this life, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men [that seek thy life]. 17 Then said Jereraiah unto Zedekiah, Thus says Jehovab, [the God of hosts, the God of Israel] : If thou wilt indeed go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with flre ; and tbou 18 shalt live, and thy house : but if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with flre, aud 19 thou Shalt not escape out of their hand. And the king [Zedekiah] said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of tne Jews tbat have fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, 20 and they mock me. And Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Hearken, I pray thee, to the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak unto thee ; that it may be well with thee, and that 21 thy soul may live. But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that Jehovah has showed 22 me : And behold, all the women that were left in the king of Judah's house brought forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, while behold they say.Have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee. Thy familiar friends : They have sunk thy feet in the bog. They have turned backward. 23 And they shall bring out [all] thy wives and thy sons unto the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shall he taken bv the hand of tbe king of Babvlon ; and this city 24 shall be burned with flre. Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words 2 With 21 : 9. 36 3 With context. Chap. 38, ver. 24] JEREMIAH [Chap. 40, ver. 13 25 that thou die not. But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say uuto thee, Tell us now what thou hast spoken unto the king, hide it not from us, "that we put thee uot to death ; also what the 26 king spoke unto thee : then thou shalt say unto them, I caused my supplication to fall before the king, that he would not cause me to return 27 to Jonathan's house to die there. And all the princes came unto' Jeremiah and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. And they silently departed from him. for the conversation 28 had uot been overheard. And Jeremiah re mained in the court of the guard until the day that JeVusalem was taken. §3. And it came to pass when Jeru- '^^^ Captured salem was taken, 586 sfc. ^Q 1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, ^y ill the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar ¦^ king of Babylon, and all his army, unto 2 Jerusalem, and besieged it; in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, in the ninth of the month, a breach was made in the city. 3 that all the princes of the king of Babylon came in and sat in the interior gate, even [Ner- gal-sharezer, Shamgar,] Nebusliazban, the chief chamberlain, Nergal-sharezer, the chief magician, and [all] the rest of the princes of the king of Babylon ; 4 And it came to pass that when Zedekiah, the king of Judah, and all the men of war saw thera, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king's garden, by the gate between the two walls; and tliey went i 5 the way of the Arabah. Aud the army of the Chaldeans pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the steppes of Jericho; and they took him, and brought him up uuto Nebuchad nezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, aud he executed judgment against € him. And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes ; also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah, 7 And he put out Zedekiah's eyes, and bound him 8 with fetters, to carry him to Babylon. And the Chaldeans burned the king's house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and broke down 9 the walls of Jerusalem. And the residue of the people that remained in the city, the deserters also, that fell away unto him, and the residue of the master- workmen [that remained], Neb- uzaradan the chief of the guards carried iuto 10 exile to Babylon. But some of the poor people, who had nothing, Nebuzaradan the chief of the guards left in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and tields. 11 At that time Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon commanded concern ing Jeremiah through Nebu- 12 zaradan the chief of the guards, saying, Take him, and look well to him, and do him no harm ; but do with him even as he shall speak unto 13 thee. So Nebuzaradan the chief of the guards sent, and Nebushazban, the chief chamberlain, aud Nergal-sharezer, the chief magician, and all the chief ofl5cers of the king of Babylon, 14 and they sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the guard, and committed him unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Sha- Ehan, that he shonld carry him unto his (own) ouse ; and he dwelt among the people. 15 And unto Jeremiah came the word §*• of Jehovah, whilehe wasshutupin fii>ed-meiceh, the court of the guard, saying, °* ''' 16 Go, and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying. Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel : Behold, I will briug my words upon this city for misfortune aud not for good ; and 17 they shall be before thee in that day. But I will deUver thee in thatday, says Jehovah : and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of 18 whom thou art afraid. For I will surely save thee, and thon shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey to thee ; because thou hast put thy trust in me, says Jehovah. And the chief of the guards took Jeremiah, and said uuto him, Jehovah thy God pronounced this misfortune upon this 3 place; and Jehovah has [brought it, and] done according as he spoke; because ye have sinned against Jehovah, aud have not hearkened to his voice, therefore this thing has come upon 4 you. [And now] behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which are upon thy hand. If it seem good to thee to come with me to Babylon, [come], then I will look well to thee ; but if it seem ill [to thee to come with me to Babylon], forbear: [behold, all the land is before thee: whither it seems good and right to 5 thee to go, thither go. And when he did not yet go back] and go back to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has ^iven charge in the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go whithersoever it seems right to thee to go. (And be said to lijm, 1 will s** back). And the chief of the guards gave him a portion 6 of food and a present and let him go. Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah [the son of A hikam] to Mizpah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land. 7 And all the captains of the forces that were in the field, even tliey and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had given Gedahah the son of Ahikam charge in the land, and had entrusted to him men, and women, aud children, and of the poor of the land, of such as were not carried 8 into exile to Babylon ; and they came unto Ged aliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Netha niah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sous of Kareah, and Seraiah thesonof Tanhuraeth, and thesonsof Ephai theNetophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. 9 And Gedaliah [the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan], swore to them and to their men, say ing. Fear not the servants of the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Baby- 10 lon, that it may be well with you. As for me, behold, I will sit (before you) at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans that may come unto ns ; bnt ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and pnt them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye shall have taken, 11 And also all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the sons of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of 12 Ahikam [thesonof Shaphan]; and all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, unto Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance, 13 Now Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the 1 Wifh 52 : 7. 37 Chap. 40, ver. 13] JEREMIAH [Chap. 42, ver. 18 captains of the forces that were in the field, 14 came nnto Gedaliah to Mizpah, and said unto him. Dost thou indeed know that Baalisthe king of the sons of Ammon has sent Ishmael [the son of Nethaniah] to take thy life? But Gedaliah 15 [the son of Ahikam] believed them not. And Johanan [the son of Kareah] spoke unto Geda liah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and smite Ishmael [the son of Nethaniah] , unbeknown to any one: wherefore should he take thy life, and (why) should be scattered all the Jews that are gathered unto thee, and the 16 remnant of Judah perish? But Gedaliah [the son of Ahikam] said unto Johanan [the son of Kareah] , Do not this thing ; for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael. yj ¦if 1 Now it came to pass in the 52 ^ I seventh month, that Ishmael l^iiniaei and * ^ the sonof Nethaniah, the sou 532^^0' of Elishama, of the seed royal, [and the chief otficers of the king] , and ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and there they did eat bread together 2 [in Mizpah]. Theu arose Ishmael thesonof Neth aniah, and the ten men that were with him, and smote Gedaliah [the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with tne sword, and slew him], whom the king of Babylon had given charge in the 3 land, and all the Jews that were with him [with Gedaliah] at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there [the men of war, Ishmael slew] . 4 And it came to pass the second day after he 5 had slain Gedaliah, unbeknown to any one, that there came certain from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even eighty men, havingtheir beards shaven and their clothes rent, and hav ing cut themselves, with oblation and frank incense in their hand, to bring them to the house 6 of Jehovah. And Ishmael [tlie son Nethania*h] went forth [from Mizpah] to meet them, while (they) wept continually as they went: and it came to pass, as he met them, he said unto them, 7 Come uuto Gedaliah, [the son of Ahikam]. And it was so. when they came uuto the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah slew them, by [the midst of] the cistern, he, and the 8 men that were with him. But ten men were found among them who said unto Ishmael, Slay us not : for we have hidden stores in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he forbore, and slew them, not among their 9 brethren. Now the cistern wherein Ishmael cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had slain, a g-reat cistern., which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel, Ish mael [the son of Nethaniah] fllled it with slain 10 men. Then Ishmael carried away captive [all the residue of the people that were in Mizpah] the king's daughters, and all the people that re mained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the chief of the guards had entrusted to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam : [and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive], aud departed to go over unto the sons of Ammon. 11 And Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, heard of all the misfortune that Ishmael [the son of 12 Nethaniah] had caused, and they took [all] the (ir) men, and went to fight with (liim) [Ish mael the son of Nethaniah], and found him by 13 the great pool that is in Gibeon. And it came to pass that when all the people that were with Ishmael saw Johanan [the son of Kareah], and all the captains of the forces that were with him, 14 then thev were glad. [So all the people that Ishmael liad carried away captive from Mizpah turned about], and they returned, [and went], 15 unto Johanan [thesonof Kareah], But Ishmael [the son of Nethaniah] escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went unto the sons of Ammon. 16 Then took Johanan [the son of Kareah] , and all the captains of the forces that were with him, alltheremnantof the people whom Ishmael [the son of Nethaniah] had carried away cap tive [from Mizpah, after that he had slain Geda liah the sou of Ahikam] , men [men of war] , and women, and children, and eunuchs, whom he 17 had brought again from Gibeon ; and they de parted, and came to a halt in Gideroth Chim- ham, which is by Beth-lehem, to make a journey 18 to come into Egypt, because of the Chaldeans: for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael [the son of Nethaniah] had slain Gedaliah [the son of Ahikam], whom the king of Babylon gave charge in the land. y| /^ 1 Then all the captains of the 53. £\/ forces, and Johanan the son Journey to ^^^ of Kareah, and Azariab the Egypt. son of Hoshaiah, and all the people ^^^ =¦ ^¦ from the least even unto the greatest, came near, 2 and said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let our sup plication fall before thee, we pray thee, and pray for us uuto Jehovah thy God, even for [all] this remnant ; for we are left but a few of many, as 3 thine eyes do see [us] : that Jehovah thy God may show us the way wherein we should walk, 4 and the thing that we should do. Then Jeremiah [the prophet] said unto them, I have heard (you) : behold, I will pray unto Jehovah yonr God according to your words ; aud it shall come to pass that the whole answer which Jehovah shall make you, I will declare to you; I will 5 keep nothing back from you. And they on their part said unto Jeremiah, Jehovah be a true and faithful witness against us, if we do not even ac cording to all the message wherewith Jehovah 6 thy God shall send thee uuto us. Whether it be good, or whether it be bad, we will hearken to the voice of Jehovah our God, unto whom we send thee ; that it may be well with us, because we hearken to the voice of Jehovah our God. 7 Aud it came to pass after ten days., that the 8 word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah.' And he called unto Johanan [the son of Kareah], and uuto all the captains of the forces that were with him, and unto all the people from the least 9 even to the greatest, and said unto them, Thus says Jehovah, [the God of Israel], unto whom ye sent me to lay your supplication before 10 him; If ye will abide quietly in this land, then will I build you. and not overthrow you, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up : for I am sorry for the misfortune that I have brought to 11 you. Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid, be not afraid of him, says Jehovah : for I am with you to save you, and to 12 deliver you from his hand. And I will grant you compassion, and he will have compassion upon you, and cause you to dwell npon your 13 own land. But if ye say. We will not dwell in this land, so that ye hearken not to the voice of 14 Jehovah your God, saying. No ; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have 15 hunger of bread ; and there will we dwell : [and now] therefore hear ye the word of Jehovah O remnant of Judah ; thus says Jehovah [of hosts, the God of Israel], If ye wholly set your faces to 16 enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there ; then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye fear, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the faraine, whereof ye are afraid shall (pursue) after (and) cleave (to) you there 17 (iu) Egypt; and there ye shall die. And it shall come to pass that all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence ;" and none of them shall remain or escape from the 18 misfortune that I will bring upon them. For thus says Jehovah [of hosts, the God of Israel] : As mine anger and my fury were poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall 38 Chap. 42, ver. 18] JEREMIAH [Chap. 44, ver, 19 enter into Egypt : and ye shall become an exe cration, and a fright, and a curse, aud a re proach; and ye shall see this place no more. 19 (This) is the word of Jehovah unto you, O rem nant of Judah, Go ye not into Egypt : (and now) ye must know certainly, for I testify against 20 you this day, that ye would have injurecl your own selves, if ye had sent me unto Jehovah your God, saying, Pray for us unto Jehovah onr God ; and according to all that Jehovah [onr God] shall say, so declare to us, aud we will do 21 (it) ;* and then, [and] I declare to you this day, had not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah your God even in all wherewith he sent me unto you. 22 Now therefore must ye know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go to sojourn there. il O 1 And it came to pass that when Jeremiah -^^ had made an end of speaking unto [all] the people all the words of Jehovah [tneir God], wherewith Jehovah [their God] had sent 2 him unto them, even all these words, then said Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the [proud] rebellious men, unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely : Je hovah our God has not sent thee to say, Ye 3 shall not go into Egypt to sojourn there : but Baruch the son of Neriah sets thee on against us, so as to deliver us iuto the hand of the Chaldeans, xhat they may put us to death, and 4 carry us into exile to Babylon. So Johanan [the son of Kareah] , and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, hearkened not to the voice of Jehovah, to dwell in the land of Judah. 5 But Johanan [the son of Kareah], and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that had returned from all the nations whither they had been driven to sojourn iu the 6 land [of Judah], the men, and the women, and the children, and the king's daughters, and [all] the persons that Nebuzaradan the chief of the fuards had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahi- am, [the son of Shaphan], and Jeremiah the 7 prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah ; and they came into the land of Egypt ; for they did not hearken to the voice of Jehovah : and they came as far as Tahpanhes. 8 Then came the word of Jehovah 5*. unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, say- „ "^.^^ : -g. ^ ' ¦' Predicted 9 Take great stones in thy hand and ''sgi s. ^J.^ ' bury them secretly in the pave ment which is at the entrance of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of 10 Judah, and say unto them. Thus says Jehovah [of hosts, the God of Israel] : Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzer the king of Bab ylon, [ray servant], aud lie shall set his throne above these stones which thou hast hidden ; and he shall stretch his glittering pavilion over 31 them. And he shall come, aud shall smite the laud of Egypt; (delivering) such as are (in tended) for death to death, and su
