Introduction

This is a Distant Reader "study carrel", a set of structured data intended to help the student, researcher, or scholar use & understand a corpus.

This study carrel was created on 2021-05-24 by Eric Morgan <emorgan@nd.edu>. The carrel was created using the Distant Reader zip2carrel process, and the input was a Zip file locally cached with the name input-file.zip. Documents in the Zip file have been saved in a cache, and each of them have been transformed & saved as a set of plain text files. All of the analysis -- "reading" -- has been done against these plain text files. For example, a short narrative report has been created. This Web page is a more verbose version of that report.

All study carrels are self-contained -- no Internet connection is necessary to use them. Download this carrel for offline reading. The carrel is made up of many subdirectories and data files. The manifest describes each one in greater detail.

Word Frequencies

By merely counting & tabulating the frequency of individual words or phrases, you can begin to get an understanding of the carrel's "aboutness". Excluding "stop words", some of the more frequent words include:

shall, god, will, lord, great, one, time, may, now, men, yet, man, come, king, also, us, people, many, things, made, make, church, therefore, first, day, like, good, saith, much, place, even, see, christ, power, earth, say, might, world, must, take, house, holy, way, let, away, came, last, text, though, name

Using the three most frequent words, the three files containing all of those words the most are A paraphrasticall explication of the twelve minor prophets. Viz. Hoseah. Joel. Amos. Obadiah. Jonah. Micah. Nahum. Habakkuk. Zephaniah. Haggai. Zechariah. Malachi. / By Da. Stokes. D.D., The prophesie of Haggai, interpreted and applyed in sundry sermons by the famous and judicious divine, John Rainolds, D.D. Never before printed, beeing very usefull for these times., and The beloved city, or, The saints reign on earth a thovsand yeares asserted and illustrated from LXV places of Holy Scripture, besides the judgement of holy learned men both at home and abroad, and also reason it selfe : likewise XXXV objections against this truth are here answered / written in Latine by Ioan Henr. Alstedius ... ; faithfully Englished, with some occasionall notes and the judgement herein ... of some of our owne famous divines..

The most frequent two-word phrases (bigrams) include:

roman non, early english, english books, shall come, books online, let us, jesus christ, will make, every one, thousand years, page images, mystery babylon, creation partnership, text creation, god will, lord god, wil make, taken away, shall see, holy ghost, rome papal, may see, shall fall, one another, long time, shall make, new testament, young man, short time, will bring, right hand, take away, every man, shall find, lord jesus, little horn, great city, almighty god, must needs, whole world, characters represented, tcp schema, image sets, bring forth, represented either, ye shall, image set, will come, will take, whole earth

And the three file that use all of the three most frequent phrases are Erra Paters prophesy or Frost Faire 1684/3 The prophecy of Gnatus a Brittish prophet: introduced by a preface of Robert Ware, Esq; and set forth with a few notes by the introductor., and To the inhabitants of London, this is, a message, in the name of the Lord..

While often deemed superficial or sophomoric, rudimentary frequencies and their associated "word clouds" can be quite insightful:

Topic Modeling

Topic modeling is another popular approach to connoting the aboutness of a corpus. If the study carrel could be summed up in a single word, then that word might be shall, and Hells destruction. By the Lady Eleanor Douglas is most about that word.

If the study carrel could be summed up in three words ("topics") then those words and their significantly associated titles include:

  1. shall - A paraphrasticall explication of the twelve minor prophets. Viz. Hoseah. Joel. Amos. Obadiah. Jonah. Micah. Nahum. Habakkuk. Zephaniah. Haggai. Zechariah. Malachi. / By Da. Stokes. D.D.
  2. shall - A discourse concerning vulgar prophecies wherein the vanity of receiving them as the certain indications of any future event is discovered, and some characters of distinction between true and pretending prophets are laid down / by John Spencer.
  3. did - An history of apparitions, oracles, prophecies, and predictions with dreams, visions, and revelations and the cunning delusions of the devil, to strengthen the idolatry of the gentiles, and the worshipping of saints departed : with the doctrine of purgatory, a work very seasonable, for discovering the impostures and religious cheats of these times / collected out of sundry authours of great credit, and delivered into English from their several originals by T.B. ; whereunto is annexed, a learned treatise, confuting the opinions of the Sadduces and Epicures, (denying the appearing of angels and devils to men) with the arguments of those that deny that angels and devils can assume bodily shapes ; written in French, and now rendred into English ; with a table to the whole work.

If the study carrel could be summed up in five topics, and each topic were each denoted with three words, then those topics and their most significantly associated files would be:

  1. shall, lord, god - An history of apparitions, oracles, prophecies, and predictions with dreams, visions, and revelations and the cunning delusions of the devil, to strengthen the idolatry of the gentiles, and the worshipping of saints departed : with the doctrine of purgatory, a work very seasonable, for discovering the impostures and religious cheats of these times / collected out of sundry authours of great credit, and delivered into English from their several originals by T.B. ; whereunto is annexed, a learned treatise, confuting the opinions of the Sadduces and Epicures, (denying the appearing of angels and devils to men) with the arguments of those that deny that angels and devils can assume bodily shapes ; written in French, and now rendred into English ; with a table to the whole work.
  2. shall, god, time - The beloved city, or, The saints reign on earth a thovsand yeares asserted and illustrated from LXV places of Holy Scripture, besides the judgement of holy learned men both at home and abroad, and also reason it selfe : likewise XXXV objections against this truth are here answered / written in Latine by Ioan Henr. Alstedius ... ; faithfully Englished, with some occasionall notes and the judgement herein ... of some of our owne famous divines.
